Electronegativity is found by experiment and interpreted as shown on: http://www.chemguide.co.uk/atoms/bonding/electroneg.html There is, as far as we are aware; no theoretical mathematical formula. Fortunately there are two sequences in the Table of Elements on: http://69.5.17.59/et1.pdf That is sufficiently similar in structure to produce a theoretical mathematical formula as shown in the table. Col. (d) shows that the values produced by the equation: r/(1/e) r = atomic radius e = electronegativity produces the same values for both sequences of elements; demonstrating that electronegativity is inversely proportional to the atomic radius. big314mp Posted February 24, 2009 Share Posted February 24, 2009 This is a fairly straightforward relation, since the tighter an atom holds its own electrons (i.e. the smaller it's radius), the tighter it will grab on to some other atom's electrons (it's electronegativity).
