zeiffelz Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 What are the main features of the biomembrane functions?
Skye Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 First of all they are barriers that encloses compartments. They have a hydrophobic central layer that prevents most molecules dissolved in the surrounding and contained aqueous layers from passing through. This allows a cell to control its internal environment, and particular compartments within the cell. They have particular features aside for particular functions. They can be modified so that they are more, or less, flexible. They can have carbohydrate receptors attached. They can be tranversed by proteins that selectively transport molecules across. They can be readily added to, in order to allow growth.
