MaxCathedral Posted May 25, 2004 Posted May 25, 2004 What is life? Is it that which reproduces? That which converts energy? That which moves. Why is a tree life, but a rock not? Dying to hear the different definitions. Max
Duke Posted May 25, 2004 Posted May 25, 2004 Defining draws too many fines lines. Especialy in this sort of topic.
chari1 Posted May 29, 2004 Posted May 29, 2004 life??hmmm? life is made up of all the five elements.when these five elements combined they formed mother earth.on mother earth from the water emerges life .and father timepermits evolution to continue.
YT2095 Posted May 29, 2004 Posted May 29, 2004 no no no, I`m fairly sure it`s closer to something like: Movement Respiration Sensitivity Nutrients (requiring) Excretion Reproduction and Growth as you can see it clearly has 7 elements
admiral_ju00 Posted May 30, 2004 Posted May 30, 2004 no no no' date=' I`m fairly sure it`s closer to something like: Movement Respiration Sensitivity Nutrients (requiring) Excretion Reproduction and Growth as you can see it clearly has 7 elements [/quote'] also Cognition as specifyed by the Santiago Theory
Glider Posted May 30, 2004 Posted May 30, 2004 Cognition is difficult in single celled life like algae, dontcha think?
admiral_ju00 Posted May 30, 2004 Posted May 30, 2004 Cognition is difficult in single celled life like algae, dontcha think? only if limiting the term to humanity. like Maturana said, a baterium while does not have cognition as you and i know it, but it can sense if there's acid nearby and swim away from or food and swim to, etc. basically, the idea is to think outside the box. here's a brief excerpt http://www.geocities.com/combusem/CAPRA4.HTM
YT2095 Posted May 30, 2004 Posted May 30, 2004 also Cognition as specifyed by the Santiago Theory well even if we did accept cognitive behaviour (and I don`t) that would make it 8 points, and certainly not 5 as stated
Glider Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 only if limiting the term to humanity. like Maturana said' date=' a baterium while does not have cognition as you and i know it, but it can sense if there's acid nearby and swim away from or food and swim to, etc.[/url'] And plants bend towards light, but that's due to the action of photophobic growth hormones being more active on the shaded side of the stem. To use the term 'cognition' to explain the heliotropic properties of a plant would be inappropriate. There is a difference between 'sensitivity' to something and 'sensing' it.
admiral_ju00 Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 yep, i know. but i didn't say you got to buy what's in the Santiago theory, i merely threw it down on the table
Crash Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 I think life from a scientific point of view is the opposite of death, so deifne death ivert it and budda bing you have the meaning of life
Duke Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 Thats more of a philosophical way of thinking. Fair enough the opposite of death is life but you have to be able to define life before hand to understand what death isn't.
Crash Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 Actually i thought death was easier to define than life....as for the philosophical version death is heaven/hell....etc I see death as the cease of all response from an organism or the loss of the MRSGREN points YT had gonna go get a dictionary
chari1 Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 yt2095 how canit be that movement is part of life. when plants dont move, and they have life.
YT2095 Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 yt2095 how canit be that movement is part of life. when plants dont move' date='and they have life.[/quote'] LOL, plants don`t move!? YOU ARE kidding me right!?
