Mokele Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 Function - neurotransmitters only affect the cell directly across the synapse, only serve to depolarize the membrane, and are quickly taken up again to be recycled. Hormones spread throughout the body, have a greater diversity of effects (none electrical), and aren't recycled as easily.
ecoli Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 (edited) Function - neurotransmitters only affect the cell directly across the synapse, only serve to depolarize the membrane, and are quickly taken up again to be recycled. Hormones spread throughout the body, have a greater diversity of effects (none electrical), and aren't recycled as easily. A slight amendment... some neurotransmitters can also act as hormones. example: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14764638 this further serves to illustrate Mokele's point. The exact same molecule can be considered a hormone at one point and a neurotransmitter at another, based totally on function. Edited April 19, 2009 by ecoli
