Guest Sciguy007 Posted May 30, 2004 Posted May 30, 2004 You’re stuck on an island and you must find a way to power a rowboat. Take a look at the following four items. Hydrogen Peroxide Vinegar (acetic acid) Baking Soda A pinch of manganese dioxide Using the materials provided, design a chemical reaction that could be used to power a rowboat across the ocean. Take your best shot
Bryn Posted May 30, 2004 Posted May 30, 2004 I'd eat the vinegar and baking soda and let my muscles do the rest. (vinegar is nice byitself, tho i've never tried baking soda by itself )
Lance Posted May 30, 2004 Posted May 30, 2004 How pure is the hydrogen peroxide? Is it that 3% crap you buy at the drugstore?
YT2095 Posted May 30, 2004 Posted May 30, 2004 well. the manganesse diox and the h2o2 mixed will make oxygen, the remaining 2 will make co2. both will be liberated as gasses. however, since it`s a ROW boat, wouldn`t it be better to leave them all as their excess weight and just ROW away with bits of wood as oars or however you spell those paddle thingies you displace water with? failing that, and you MUST power it, use the acid and the H2O2 and wood alc to make an organic peroxide rocket engine use the bicarb and any remaining acid as a fire extinguisher made from a coconut shell ))) have a nice day
Guest Sciguy007 Posted May 30, 2004 Posted May 30, 2004 Forgot to ask, who can also write the word equation and balanced chemical equation for all possible reactions?
budullewraagh Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 well, we all know yt will never be stuck on an uninhabited island for long...
YT2095 Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 TRUE and the above proviso is based on the idea that I`de actualy WANT to leave anyway now then, where are those cute chicks in the grass skirts?
Sayonara Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 well, we all know yt will never be stuck on an uninhabited island for long... Depends whether or not the locals stake him out near some ant hills.
Tesseract Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 Depends whether or not the locals stake him out near some ant hills. Didnt the post you quoted say uninhabitied?
Fudyomo Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 LOL, you guys crack me up. Nice reply YT .... very nice....
Tian_07 Posted June 1, 2004 Posted June 1, 2004 k... we know dat Vinegar and baking soda make CO2 and that H2O2 and MnO2 make oxygen... but the point is... wuld it be efficient to get off the island,... i mean if you really want to power the boat by expansion of gases, why not get a huge@$$ bottle rocket (6 KNO3 + 2 C11H22O11) and light her off... even then you probably still couldnt get enough power... ok i dont know if this is right... but the chemical equation go as follows between vinegar and baking soda... C2H4O2 + NaHCO3 --> CO2 + H20 + NaC2H3O2 that should be balanced... Acetic acid + Sodium Bicarbonate --> Carbon Dioxide + Water + Sodium Acetate cheerz (and by the way... id use the oars... theyll get you alot further...)
