albertlee Posted June 16, 2004 Posted June 16, 2004 What do the speed and other performance differ between USB 1.1 and 2.0? Albert
mossoi Posted June 16, 2004 Posted June 16, 2004 USB 2 is theoretically 40 times faster than USB 1.1 with a transfer speed of 480Mbps. While it's probably not quite as fast as that in real world use the difference is still very apparent when moving large data files.
albertlee Posted June 16, 2004 Author Posted June 16, 2004 I corrently have a problem, I have a external harddrive using USB 2.0, but my USB socket on my laptop is 1.1, I was thinking to change it, but unlike desktop, I dont know how to.... Is there any device, method to do such? Albert
Sayonara Posted June 16, 2004 Posted June 16, 2004 The first thing to do is to find out if your motherboard will support USB 2 hardware.
mossoi Posted June 16, 2004 Posted June 16, 2004 Here's a load of info on USB - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/learnmore/jones_02august05.mspx If you want to run USB2 devices on a laptop with USB1 ports you'll have to get a USB2 PCMCIA card. Here's an example - http://www.bixnet.com/2poruspcmcic.html. This won't have the full performance of a true USB2 bus though.
Sayonara Posted June 16, 2004 Posted June 16, 2004 Awwww... I wanted him to ask me if his motherboard supported USB 2 Anyway, a caution from that page: Note: Make sure your laptop/notebook computer PCMCIA slot supports 32-bit CardBus before you order this product. Your manual or manufacturer of the laptop/notebook is the best place to verify the type of your laptop/notebook PCMCIA slots. Most laptops made after 1998 have 32-bit Cardbus PCMCIA slots.

Thx Mossoi for your help... but how much slower does that PCMCIA card differ compared with true USB2? To Sayonara, mine does support, I bought it in 2002... Albert
Sayonara Posted June 16, 2004 Posted June 16, 2004 The specs for that card claim that it runs at the same speed as a USB2 bus. See if you can find any independent benchmark tests for it.
