wasn't sure if this belongs in this section but its here now..

 

To be clear, this isn't a fanatical thing or talking up the movie. I like most of the more recent movies for what they are, movies, but they have a very logical and real use of the possible technologies we are looking at.

 

wouldn't think I am the first one to think of this so direct a link if anyone knows of anything related.

 

existing technology, ideas, theoretical ideas or trialed technology, etc... the question for discussion is, with the idea that the power source was possible now, in what ways would a suit similar to that in Iron Man be made?

in relation to the mechanics of the movement of it, protection of the user, use of the power system for creating a means of flight and different uses or any other issues raised.

 

up for discussion, input and anything others might not be aware of. i have already givin this though....

I think the biggest limitations would be the portable power supply(as they even talked about in the movie) and the flight capabilities.

 

There's a Japanese exosuit, but I'd be weary of them because the company's name is Cyberdyne.

We're moving towards them, but one problem I see is that a lot of them suffer from "better-faster-harder-longer" expectations - they're billed as an all-around enhancement, when in reality, they'll be subject to tradeoffs like any other mechanical or biological system. Big, hulking strong things don't move fast, and fast things typically aren't very strong.

 

I am optimistic about such systems, but I think we need to be realistic.

Honestly, what makes me most excited about these sorts of things is the expectation that by the time I'm old and physically feeble (I'm currently only 24), "wearable robotics" will be sleek and inexpensive enough that I can keep my independence and dignity until I die. (And maybe fight robocop.)

dont know about flight but the suit can probably be made quite fast by simply making the foot much longer and walking/running on its toes (like a cat).

haha yes probably not the beso of names to have, for this tho its more about how to generate the energies from said power suply with similar capabilities.

mokele, i agree with what you mean about the faster is normally weaker so thats what i thought i'd bring this up for :)

Actually, digitigrade vs plantigrade doesn't necessarily correlate with speed, though it may with acceleration. The ugly truth is that we don't actually know what is the main limiting factor in speed, and even if we did, that may not apply to a robot due to different actuator properties.

Hi R/G - I know you didn't really want fiction, but as soon as I read your thread title I thought of the Power Armour worn by Space Marines (Fictional charachters created by Games Workshop). Although it isn't real - It is cool. Have you come accross Space Marines at all?

Drp; no i havent but will take a look thanks.

Reguarding the discussion of the speed of the suit, think it should be edged more toward being freely moving around the body when worn in that sense of speed.
