ennui Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 When I was reading a blog today, I saw a post about a sweater which had the complete periodic table on it. The only problem is that it was an ugly colour. It's my housemate's birthday coming up, and he's doing a PhD in genetics. Does anyone know of any sciencey/geeky gifts online that I could get him along these lines? Also, if I saw something cool enough, I would probably get something for myself. Oh, and I should probably note that he already has just about every one of those Giant Microbe toys! Many thanks!
ennui Posted August 17, 2009 Author Posted August 17, 2009 Great idea! But I've had a quick look on Google & eBay and can't seem to find one . I'm not very creative or good at building things, or I'd buy a set and make it myself.

insane_alien Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 http://images.google.co.uk/images?q=lego+DNA&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=C2iJSqfFH5-NjAfawumiCw&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=4 there are some images you could base a design off of. doesn't look to hard to build.
ydoaPs Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 DNA molecule made of LEGO? Or you could use magnets for $25 USD. It's near the bottom of the page.
ennui Posted August 17, 2009 Author Posted August 17, 2009 I'm terrible with lego, I could never build anything even as a kid. But I'm going to keep scouting Google to see if anyone could send something ready-made. That book looks cool - have you read it? Is it any good?
CharonY Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 Printing genetic code on a T-shirt? Or how about a chromosome map? DNA is so Watson and Crick.
John Cuthber Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 I know this looks a bit like a plug, but I have no commercial links to these people, honest. I'd be happy to get just about any of the t shirts etc from here. http://store.xkcd.com/

iNow Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 I always enjoyed gifts which led to me getting laid. I think most scientists would tend to agree. I'm just saying... which birthday presents do YOU wind up remembering a decade later?

I'm just saying... which birthday presents do YOU wind up remembering a decade later? So long as those birthday presents don't result in you having to buy more birthday presents.
iNow Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 So long as those birthday presents don't result in you having to buy more birthday presents. rotfl... Couldn't agree more.
bbrubaker Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 (edited) I always enjoyed gifts which led to me getting laid. I think most scientists would tend to agree. I'm just saying... which birthday presents do YOU wind up remembering a decade later? Well... a case of V.D. IS a gift you'll remember for decades to come. I'm just sayin'! iNow Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 Nah... Only the ones which can't be cured with penicillin.
CharonY Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 I always enjoyed gifts which led to me getting laid. Uh. Benzodiazepines?
iNow Posted August 24, 2009 Posted August 24, 2009 Why, do those induce blindness in females, or something?
John Cuthber Posted August 24, 2009 Posted August 24, 2009 As Ogden Nash might say these days; Candy is Dandy but liquor is quicker. Rohypnol is difficult to rhyme or scan.
LadyEwok88 Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 I'd go with something from Xump or Borders for a geeky guy... I like the DNA mug, ya never know when you'll be asked for/about some DNA... http://www.xump.com/Science/DNAMug.cfm But I get men gifts from their gift section a lot... http://www.xump.com/Science/ScienceToysGifts.cfm Good luck!

I bought myself a periodic table t-shirt which looks really cool, but its not the kind of thing you'd like to wear when going out or as a causual wear. But, if your friend like chemistry stuff i suggest buy him/her a molecular modelling set. hope this helps a bit.
