Hi,

 

In chemisty lab ,in the expirament of Oxidiation-Reduction titrations| : determination of Oxalate.

 

the equestion is :

why is the KMnO4 solution filtred ?? and why should it not be stored in rubber-stoppered bottle ??

the usual reason for filtering something is to remove any solids. Without more details it's hard to tell in this particular example.

 

KMnO4 is a strong oxidiser. what do you think it might do to rubber? and what do you think that might do to the KMnO4?

KMnO4 in neutral aqueous solution is not stable. It slowly gets converted into MnO2. If MnO2 is not filtered out , MnO2 will interfere with all colorimetry expts and also the regular chemical reactions.

I think, it will interacte with the rubber becuase it's strong oxidaser.

you led me to ask more ^^ ..

what's the reaction will happen btw them ??

i'm not sure of the exact reaction but I wouldnt be surprised if it did indeed oxidise the rubber, and by doing so, be reduced itself. probably to MnO2 and some potassium salt. I'm just guessing, though.
