My question is fairly simple, yet the combined powers of Bing and Google cannot seem to answer it. How much energy does it take to compress a solid?

Well I would think the energy needed to compress it must be greater than the mass of the object times the speed of light squared. But I am not too sure about that.

 

Energy needed to compress > (Mass of object)c^2

I'm fairly sure it is quite a bit more complicated than that. It depends on the solid you want to compress, how much you want to compress it, and maybe some other things I'm not aware of.
