Frosty Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 One of my students brought in a large "meteorite" the other day. His father found it in a field in Iowa. What tests can we do here at school to determine if it is a real meteorite?
Spyman Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 Do You Think You May Have Found a Meteorite? Meteorites have several distinguishing characteristics that make them different from terrestrial (Earth) rocks. You can use this list to guide you through them. Usually, meteorites have all or most of these characteristics. Sometimes, detailed chemical analyses need to be done, but only on rocks that meet all these characteristics. http://epswww.unm.edu/iom/ident/index.html
Ophiolite Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 If you were able to post some photographs of the object there are some members here who might be able to comment. (Though it occurs to me that as a new member you may not be able to post photos yet.)
