Freeman
I am physically assembling a book, and I don't know what I should make the cover out of! BTW, it is going to be hard cover.... Plus, I need to get some pages printed (approx. 1500+), so I do not want to waste my pinter ink. Is there any cheap printing service?
ydoaPs
Find a friend with a laser printer. It might help you if you offer to provide the paper for them.
Freeman
Does a laser printer use less ink? Would kinkos do it? Or would there be a "print shop"?
ydoaPs
A laser printer uses NO ink.
Sayonara
Laser printers use toner (extremely fine plastic granules). The cartridges are quite expensive compared to ink, but they usually print at least 5,000 pages (unless it's a godawful printer).
ydoaPs
My school has laser printers, and i just thought that they burned the paper.
Sayonara
They create an electrostatic charge on the paper using a laser, and the toner sticks to it. Then it gets melted by the lamp and fuses in place. Bit of an odd technology, but it works quite well. http://www.chaminade.org/MIS/Articles/HowLaserPrinterWorks.htm
ydoaPs
Why don't they just burn the paper a little? Oh, the lamp is why the paper is warm after printing.
Tesseract
Why don't they just burn the paper a little? Oh' date=' the lamp is why the paper is warm after printing.[/quote'] Id say because all the things used to make the print is warm. ie. laser, toner, lamp, various other technologies
Sayonara
The laser isn't really "hot". It is the lamp that generates most of the heat. I'm guessing they don't burn the paper because copy rooms and offices would gradually fill with soot.
ydoaPs
You two switched the question and the statement. A fan could be put in to collect the soot.
Tesseract
The laser isn't really "hot". No, they use a laser made of ice not photons...
Tesseract
You two switched the question and the statement. A fan could be put in to collect the soot. But then you would eventually need to clean the fan.And people arent paid for fan maintenance thses days.
ydoaPs
Your computer has a fan and you still use it.
Sayonara
I should certainly hope soot is not a problem there.

Sayonara
I don't know about you but I clean my fans (and cards as it happens) regularly, and I don't get paid for maintaining them.
ydoaPs
Why not do the same thing for a printer?
Sayonara
Because it's more complex, more compact, less accessible, and usually warrantied in order to prevent user-end meddling.
Phi for All
Does a laser printer use less ink? Would kinkos do it? Or would there be a "print shop"?Offering to buy a cartridge for your friend's laser printer could run $120-175. Compare with an independent printing service, the kind of folks who do business cards and the like. Do NOT use Kinko's for 1500 copies. They are the convenience stores of the print world. That would be like buying your groceries every week at 7-11. Are you making just one book? If so, find an art supply store for cover material, they may even have a kit for self-binding (no, it's not a BDSM thing). Or heavy cardboard covered in cloth from a fabric store (or favorite jeans) would give you the ability to print the name of the book on the cloth (silk-screen, calligraphy, etc). ydoaPs
Your computer would be easier to screw up. All you would need is this: 1) a laser 2) a fan 3) a box or something else to hold the soot (removable) It could have a panel that you could remove for easy cleaning. Sayonara
Your computer would be easier to screw up. Yours might be. Mine definitely isn't. All you would need is this: 1) a laser2) a fan 3) a box or something else to hold the soot (removable) It could have a panel that you could remove for easy cleaning. You're talking about this as if soot was the only reason for not having an office device that burns the inflammables you have fed into it.
Freeman
So, does a laser printer use different paper than normal printers???
admiral_ju00
Is it a book that you're thining of mass producing or keeping it unique? If unique, I'd use pigskin(don't know if it's actually pig's skin, but you know what I mean). Kind of like this book:
Freeman
I am going to make five, or so. How much is "pig skin"???
