padren Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 It looks like things aren't settling down at all in Iran, with protests becoming violent and looking a lot more like something out of Greece not so long ago. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/8432047.stm?ls Due to the media blackout everything comes from video on cell phones and isn't verified by news agencies, but it really looks like things are heating up big time. I previously thought things were settling down, but it looks like the opposite is happening. Any thoughts on how this will play out?
DJBruce Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 I, like you, thought that the protests in Iran were virtually down with, but I guess it I was completely wrong. I see no good way forward for the Iranian people. Either they give up their protests, and continue to live in a police theocracy with a crazy dictator at the helm. Or the Iranian people can continue to protest which in my opinion will only continue to increase in their violence. Rebellion from Iran's current government will not come without much bloodshed, and I do not see an major country except possibly Israel willing to step up and help the Iranian people. Israel would probably not even do that as the major interest is simply disarming Iran's possible nuclear capabilities.
CaptainPanic Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 Violence is no solution. But I hope that protests will continue - at some points the Iranian government must give up something. The big question I have is how widespread the protests are. We must realize that Western media will blow up any Iranian protest against the Iranian government out of proportion too... Propaganda happens in both sides.
Phi for All Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 There are so many powerful groups that profit from instability, violence and fear. It seems logical to avoid the dark road "They" would lead us down and reject their tactics, but that seems naive and ineffective. I sympathize with the Iranian people's rejection of tyranny and it would be wonderful to help them in their protests without creating more instability, violence and fear.
Mr Skeptic Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 Hey, I know. Maybe we could secretly give Iran a bunch of weapons. Are they holding any hostages we could trade for?
