bloodhound Posted July 21, 2004 Author Posted July 21, 2004 u telling me u havent ever heard of bernoulli ?
jordan Posted July 21, 2004 Posted July 21, 2004 Not that I haven't heard of them, don't know much about them.
5614 Posted July 21, 2004 Posted July 21, 2004 hey, my b-days the day be4 yt's! fluke! on may 5: 1580 : Faulhaber 1833 : Fuchs 1842 : Heinrich Weber 1883 : Wheeler 1895 : Bergman 1897 : Tricomi 1923 : Morawetz Mathematicians who died on this day: 1859 : Dirichlet 1957 : Löwenheim thats 7 born 2 dead, thats pretty good id say and the quote of the day! i thought that this was quite funny Stefan Bergman (1895 - 1977) "I speak twelve languages: English is the bestest."
bloodhound Posted July 21, 2004 Author Posted July 21, 2004 they are quite famous in the mathematical and physics world here are some of the stuff they (the family) contributed Bernoulli's Principle states that as the speed of a moving fluid increases, the pressure within the fluid decreases. (really important in aerodynamics and such) Bernoulli distribution is also the most basic discrete probability distribution having two possible outcomes. n=0 (failure)and n=1(success) which p being probability of suceeess and 1-p of failure. some wonderful anecdotes here: i love reading about maths history. they fascinate me http://www-gap.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/HistTopics/Brachistochrone.html "The well known de l'Hôpital's rule is contained in this calculus book and it is therefore a result of Johann Bernoulli. In fact proof that the work was due to Bernoulli was not obtained until 1922 " from http://www-gap.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/Mathematicians/Bernoulli_Johann.html
jordan Posted July 21, 2004 Posted July 21, 2004 This is where I really hate that I can recognize names but never remember what they mean until someone reminds me. I'll have to work on that.
MulderMan Posted July 21, 2004 Posted July 21, 2004 jimi hendrix and bruce lee were born on my birthday

bloodhound Posted July 21, 2004 Author Posted July 21, 2004 oh my god . most of the pple here seem to share their bdays with death or birth of some famous mathematicians.. except me
Gant Posted July 21, 2004 Posted July 21, 2004 Yes,,,Leonard Nimoy,,,also know as Spock,,,was born on feb 7.
jordan Posted July 21, 2004 Posted July 21, 2004 How are you deciding who's famous and who's not, bloodhound? I look through a random bunch of dates and they all seemed to have a good sampling of people so I doubt yours is completely blank. I couldn't find your birthday under your profile to be sure though.
bloodhound Posted July 21, 2004 Author Posted July 21, 2004 this thread was meant to look at Famous Mathematicians. thats why i gave the link.and put the tread in the maths section. i should have said that in the thread topic.
Dave Posted July 21, 2004 Posted July 21, 2004 Hmm. That's not really answering jordan's question though
bloodhound Posted July 22, 2004 Author Posted July 22, 2004 he was addressing my complaint that i didnt share my b day with birth or death of anyone famous. he probably didn't realise that i was talking about famous mathematicians. so yes i hink i did answer jordan's question
jordan Posted July 22, 2004 Posted July 22, 2004 I knew you were talking about famous mathmaticians. I also knew the site you linked to only listed mathematicians. At a random sampling I found most had more than 5 per day so either yours is really exeptional or you are counting all of the ones listed as famous.
bloodhound Posted July 22, 2004 Author Posted July 22, 2004 The ones pple have listen so far jordan : Bernoulli 5614: Weber, Dirichlet atinymonkey: Feynman,Schwarzschild MulderMan:de Moivre I am defining famous: if u hear the name in general studying maths in a level , and undergrad degree. nothing specialised. for example Gauss, Cauchy, Lagrange, Legendre, Euler, Euclid, Argand, De Moivre, Ramanujan, Hardy, Tayor, Mclaurin, Newton, Poisson, Bernoulli, Hilbert, Fermat, Pascal etc.etc
Rakdos Posted July 22, 2004 Posted July 22, 2004 August 30 Mathematicians born on this day: 1819 : Serret 1856 : Runge 1906 : Taussky-Todd Mathematicians who died on this day: 1928 : Wien
