Mr Skeptic Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 So, my grandma had emails on webTV, transferred to a localnet address, and currently residing on an old linux computer, saved in an old version of ThunderBird. We no longer have those mail services, as they came with her internet connection and she has switched to verizon. Now, she uses yahoo and gmail for her email. She wants to get rid of the old computer, but she wants her old emails as well. Is there a way to rescue them?
insane_alien Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 i'm pretty sure thunderbird has an option to export the database and you can probably import them to googlemail.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 If you add your gmail account to Thunderbird via IMAP you can just drag and drop all the messages into gmail.
Mr Skeptic Posted January 9, 2010 Author Posted January 9, 2010 OK, I will try that. The version of ThunderBird might be older than gmail, so if it doesn't work I'll try updating it. I hope it's nice and backwards compatible. Merged post follows: Consecutive posts mergedMmm, ThunderBird is version 1.5.0.13+1.5.0.15b.dfsg1+prepatch080614d-0etch1 and gnome is broken (gives failsafe terminal). Updating...
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Thunderbird 3 has Gmail-specific adjustments, but any version will do, since they all support IMAP. You'll also have to go into the Gmail settings and enable IMAP.
Mr Skeptic Posted January 10, 2010 Author Posted January 10, 2010 Thanks, I finally got the old clunker updated (which fixed the broken gnome), and then I copied it over with IMAP. Was actually quite easy once I knew what to do, thanks. It just took a long time to update.
