Skye Posted July 26, 2004 Posted July 26, 2004 As most people know, there's a great deal of stuff in the universe. A fear is that a large hunk of this stuff will one day come crashing into the Earth, ending civilisation as we know it. So the ESA has decided to test a popular idea to combat this problem: shooting the asteroid from Earth. The idea is to just deflect the asteroid so that it misses Earth. For some reason the Spanish group behind the plan has decided to call the mission Don Quixote, after that crazy bastard that delusionally charged windmills. http://www.abc.net.au/science/news/stories/s1156884.htm
Sayonara Posted July 26, 2004 Posted July 26, 2004 The simulation of the mission is pretty pants. Still, it could come in handy.
TheProphet Posted July 26, 2004 Posted July 26, 2004 Well it's a real threat so i think it's about time to try to get some experince in Asteroid shooting =) Guess the old game wasn't enough after all hehe
[Tycho?] Posted July 26, 2004 Posted July 26, 2004 Good idea, it was going to come someday. Of course deflecting the ol' planet killer would be quite a task.
MolecularMan14 Posted July 26, 2004 Posted July 26, 2004 Thats true but perhaps with greater technology by then, maybe someone will find another...less primitive...style of taking down an Earth bound asteroid. Then again, if it works, it works!
