Is it possible to build a giant particle accelerator in space?

A thought came to my mind. If only we could find or bring from earth the resources necessarily to build a particle accelerator in space, we would not need to worry about safety or space concerns which the future accelerators (i mean those far beyond the LHC) will bring up.

 

So is it theoretically possible to build a giant particle accelerator (even larger than the LHC) in space?

I don't think we need to build one as such. There are plenty of high energy particles in space. We could probe energies higher than that at the LHC by looking at cosmic rays.

Yes, why not? It would be much more expensive though. Besides, the accelerated particles should be stopped somehow after passing the target and returned in the system (a closed current circuit). Otherwise your accelerator would get extremely charged with time which is not good at all.
