I am having some trouble grabing the concept of cross linking. I was wondering if someone could explain how it works.

We're going to need more info than that. You mean, in polymers?

Yes, like polyvinyl alcohol and sodium tetraborate.

The polymer molecules are long chains of similar repeating units strung together.

Cross links are joins from one chain to another (or sometimes to a different bit of the same chain).
