alt_f13 Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 Superfly infact. I find it hillarious how glass and memory just weren't programmed into them. I'm curious though, why do bugs always fly at the lights? I mean, it's not like they just fly at the sun every day... that would be the absolute dumbest natural occurence on the planet.
admiral_ju00 Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 I don't know of how many bugs actually have a brain, more likely almost none of them have it. So in that case, they wouldn't retain any memory(long or short term) and have no ability to learn things. However, it maybe some sort of an innate genetic trait, or possibly even some evolutionary remnant of the old times. Or it could be that a brighter light in the middle of nothing simply sparks their curiosity.
Phi for All Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 I remember hearing that moths use the moon (or sun?) to navigate and lights throw them off because they try to use them the same way. Since the lights are much closer they end up going around and around them, eventually spiraling inward to them. This was hearsay, and not from a trusted source.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 They try to keep the sun at a cetain angle to their eyes to fly straight. If it's close, they keep turning to keep it at the same angle, and eventually hit it.
