Yes. However this solar cycle is significantly different compared to the past solar cycles we've had. The solar maximum of 2012 is significantly stronger in terms of the amount of energy that each solar flare produces, the duration time of each solar phenomenon, and the amount of events that we've had and will continue to have. The peak of this solar cycle is on the winter solstice of 2012.

If you look at the data you can see that around the time of the winter solstice of 2009, there was a significant amount of solar activity. This marked the beginning of the solar cycle.

It is expected to increase, but only around the time of the winter solstice of each year, in which our position in space will be facing the galactic bulge. The reason why it is significantly different is that these solar event have all happened in a short period of time and it has been causing all of the earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Some seem skeptical about the connection between solar activity and seismic activity. However physicist, seismologists, and astronomers from around the world are beginning to agree that solar activity is causation of seismic activity. The last workshop on the topic of seismo- electromagnetics was in 2005.

The next one is this year in November.

Over the past 6 months, there is more than enough data collected from NASA and geologist from around the world to show there is a strong relationship between these two events.

With that in mind you have to ask yourself, what will the outcome be of the climax of this solar cycle? Here is our position in space relative to everything else right now:

The galactic bulge does have a gravitational force of attraction. We have seen this with the perturbing orbits of our outer planets. Some have speculated that the causation of this is another planet (Planet X) or a brown dwarf beyond the Oort cloud. However it is neither. It is actually the galactic core which also causes our solar cycles. Our position in space on the winter solstice of 2012 proves that we will face the full force of attraction, which will cause a strong amount of solar activity and thus volcanic and seismic activity. Here is our position in space relative to everything else on the winter solstice of 2012:

As you can see there is nothing else in between the sun, the planet and the galactic core.

Once again before coming to the conclusion that their is no possible way that this will affect us, an investigation is needed by the public and others to determine the outcome of these coming events. However from what has been happening over the past 6 months, the situation is looking grim. Think about all of the earthquakes we've been having, the oil well blowout, the volcanic eruption in Iceland and Ecuador, and Jupiter losing one of its rings. It can all be traced back to the energy of the sun. If you are still skeptical about all of this then ask yourself again the same question, what will the outcome be of the climax of this solar cycle, when it is the winter solstice of 2011. By that time more earthquakes and volcano eruptions will have occurred, and it will be hard to dismiss this connection.

It's on my to-do list.

On a serious note, I think if anything were to happen, then it would have a rate of destruction. That with the most destruction at once would more than likely be an asteroid. I think the next would be grey-goo. From there, it would be massive, world-wide earthquakes. The difference is that grey-goo would really target destruction of the Earth as a whole. Digging yourself a hole in the ground wouldn't do any good.

Since there hasn't been an immediate observation of change, then I'll assume Armageddon isn't happening any time soon.

One way to approach this is to ask what happened the last time the earth, sun and center of galaxy had this arrangement. That was 5126 years ago. There were no world wide global disasters. This means that is the not the point of the end of the Mayan cycle. That is Hollywood.

The cyclic change has to do with a fundament change in humans. For your information, here is a few thing that happened near the last alignment. One can see some major changes in humans began. (Wikipedia)

Once again our position in space relative to other celestial bodies such as other stars and planets make this alignment different. Looking at previous alignments would not be a good way to look at this situation because the planet's position in space relative to everything else is not the same. A news report from Tuesdays June 8th meeting held by authorities in Washington DC has in short concluded that we are headed for the worst solar storm ever seen and that "Earth and space are about to come into contact in a way that's new to human history." However the question is what is causing it to be so much different?

In short some may speculate that this solar cycle is different due to the Great Celestial Conjunction. This event takes place four times a Precessional cycle (Platonic year), approximately every 6500 years, but the current one is seemingly to be considered as the Origin of this cycle since the Tropical Zodiac Winter Solstice point is also close to the Galactic Centre and Solar Apex (the latter object is not considered in other concepts). The orthogonality of the Solar Zodiac and Tropical Zodiac axes at the Great Celestial Conjunction has evidently caused a change in both the flux and polarities of the energies radiated from the Galaxy to the Earth. To clarify this point, just think what happens when you stick your hand out of the window of a driving car. When you hold your hand orthogonal to the direction of travel of the car, you will get the maximum flux of the wind energy that will be experienced as drag, but when hold your hand parallel to the direction of travel, almost no drag is experienced. This is also why we align a solar panel perpendicular to the solar rays to get the maximum flux and the highest efficiency. This is what’s been happening on a Galactic scale with the Earth, the ‘solar panel’ has been aligned such that we’re experiencing a different Galactic energy flux radiated from the Galactic Core.

A more in depth explanation of the relationship of other celestial bodies and their location in space relative to our sun and planet is explained in the link below.
