Icefire Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 It requires too much energy to leave gravity wells such as Earth. Which is probably a good thing, because with enough space travel we run he risk of eventually dissipating earth's mass into the void.
Leader Bee Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 It's gonna be awkward to communicate with aliens if we ever find any, the distances are just too vast and getting larger thanks to cosmic expansion. On the other hand I suppose that makes it harder for them if they decide to invade us, reinforcements will take some time to arrive.
ajb Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 The thing I don't like about the universe is that it seems to give us no real hints into the nature of quantum gravity. For sure there are general theoretical aspects known, but nature itself is not providing any clues at the scales we can currently probe. It would be very nice if some astrophysical/cosmological observation did not agree with with general relativity. Such an event would provide us with some line to investigate.
Phi for All Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 It's too universal. Talk about painting with broad strokes!
Newbies_Kid Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 Universe makes us curious and excited. We had already lost billion dollars and also life for it

Mr Skeptic Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 (edited) Universe: Everything is too far away. Although I suppose I am happy that it won't all collapse on itself. Edited April 13, 2010 by Mr Skeptic
Mr Skeptic Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 Earth: It's big enough that we might figure out not to be retards before we destroy the environment.

Mr Skeptic Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 Also, if you want to say "hello" you can say that in the introduce yourself thread. No need to say that in 9 different threads. If people are not discussing the topics you brought up, it is not because they forgot about them -- you need to better know your audience, and post something interesting and thoughtful.
Moontanman Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 Speed limits, 70mph on local interstates and that whole speed of light thing, very annoying.
JohnB Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 I like the way that gravity stops all the water running to the bottom and falling off.

Iggy Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 I like the way fish don't notice the hook. I don't like the way deer wait for the headlights to make the first move. I like being startled by thunder and the sound rain makes on the roof. I don't like my dog's reaction to either. I like bees because they dance and make honey. I don't like people who insist that if the bees go extinct it'll just be a matter of hours before the ecosystem self-destructs in apocalyptic starvation collapsing the food chain, turning the oceans red with blood, vaporizing rain forests at the speed of sound, and leaving no chance of human survival. Also, there would be a terrible shortage of honey. I like dolphins because they’re very intelligent and cute to boot, and they occasionally save people from sharks. But, I don’t like that they also occasionally try to rape people, because, you know, no means no. Speaking of dolphins, I also really like killer whales (orca). They are majestic, intelligent, and have a whole lot of personality. I don’t like our human tendency to hold them in captivity in tiny pools and make them perform tricks for food. It's really quite rude. Overall and in general, I like life on earth. I give it a B- graded on the intergalactic curve of class M planets (planet rankings are on display at your local planning department in Alpha Centauri). Unfortunately, a good deal of the less-than-fantastic aspects that I personally notice come from humanity. But, a good deal of the truly inspiring aspects do too.
