Dave Posted August 9, 2004 Posted August 9, 2004 Please refer to the thread in the announcements forum for further information on connecting to our new IRC channel. There are some beginner hints in there. To skip the spiel though, this is the connection information: Server: irc.blackcobalt.net:6667 Channel: #sfn I've made this sticky for the time being so that people read it
jordan Posted August 10, 2004 Posted August 10, 2004 I remember I used to go on there but then I forgot about it. And when I was on, no one was ever on.
Dave Posted August 10, 2004 Author Posted August 10, 2004 Hmm. I think part of the problem is that people go on and then just don't wait for someone else to come on if nobody's in, so people just end up leaving. I'll make a plea to the general community now: PLEASE get on IRC and stay put while you're online; that way we're bound to get more than a few people staying around at any one time. It doesn't waste hardly any bandwidth, and it's a fun way to chat in realtime to the other guys on the forum. Maybe if nobody's there, just get a friend or two to come on or something, because I'd like to see the IRC room grow quite a bit.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted August 10, 2004 Posted August 10, 2004 Can't we have it like we did before, where it's based in the browser instead of in a seperate program?
Dave Posted August 10, 2004 Author Posted August 10, 2004 We're working on it. I've posted something in the mod forum to blike about setting it up.
Lance Posted August 10, 2004 Posted August 10, 2004 I thought we shared a room with the physics forums...
Dave Posted August 10, 2004 Author Posted August 10, 2004 Well we did, but that kindof fell through the floor. The network was crappy and nobody ever turned up in there. At least this way we have control over the channel, not PF.
Dave Posted August 12, 2004 Author Posted August 12, 2004 Okay, #sfn is officially up: quartz is our little bot that sits and keeps the place open. Doesn't have many features, but he does have a google search facility. In IRC, type "quartz google your phrase here" to display the first result from the google search of "your phrase here". Alternatively, use: "quartz google 7 your phrase here" to display the 7th result, and so on... I'm going on holiday now, and I expect to see a full IRC room when I get back Hope you all enjoy the bot, see you in a couple weeks.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted August 19, 2004 Posted August 19, 2004 you don't even have to type "quartz". And why the heck don't people USE THE CHAT! Hardly anybody is on! Whenever I'm on there's only 2 or 3 others online. rrrgh.
Sayonara Posted August 19, 2004 Posted August 19, 2004 Yesterday got quite active at one point, so it's getting better.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted August 19, 2004 Posted August 19, 2004 I suppose it will take a while for users to notice it. Although yourdadonapogos says that it would not let him connect (with the Java applet) so I wonder what's going on. I told him to get mIRC.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted August 19, 2004 Posted August 19, 2004 I suppose more people are using it if there are 12 online and only 2 on chat, right?
NSX Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 quartz is our little bot that sits and keeps the place open lol! I thought quartz was QuarkQuarkQuark2001 lol @ ||All the cool kids idle here YT is so cool then: *** YT-Away has been idle 2076 minutes, signed on at Fri Aug 20 09:42:13 2004 Even more so the bot LOL *** quartz has been idle 3319 minutes, signed on at Wed Aug 11 20:02:16 2004
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 Poor quartz has no social life. He's always at the computer.
ydoaPs Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 lol, but no one else is. even cap isn't on chat.
Dave Posted August 23, 2004 Author Posted August 23, 2004 You all need to get on there, or I'm going to have to get the IRC beating stick out.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted August 24, 2004 Posted August 24, 2004 It's not a member here. It's someone who says he found this site by browsing and didn't want to register. I don't trust him much.
Dave Posted August 24, 2004 Author Posted August 24, 2004 That's fair enough; the guy just doesn't want to register
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted August 24, 2004 Posted August 24, 2004 He was asking me a bunch of questions about me and where I live and all that. I don't like that.
5614 Posted September 2, 2004 Posted September 2, 2004 so then dont answer him, ignore him if you want.... all IRC channels are open to the whole world, its not a closed chat... although people can be banned.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted October 7, 2004 Posted October 7, 2004 You all need to get on there, or I'm going to have to get the IRC beating stick out. Methinks you should. NOBODY IS ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! rrgh.
YT2095 Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 Dave, I`ve tried a few different clients, and they all do the same, and it`s only happening to me? all other networks seem to work just fine (Undernet, Arcnet etc...) is it a DOS attack maybe? like some some kind of ping flood?
