Airbrush Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 How long will it be before we hear some real news? It is operating at 3 times the highest energy yet, but all they tell us is what we have heard before. http://press.web.cern.ch/press/PressReleases/Releases2010/PR07.10E.html

Realize that they are generating incredible amounts of data that will take time to sift through.
Klaynos Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 How long will it be before we hear some real news? It is operating at 3 times the highest energy yet, but all they tell us is what we have heard before. http://press.web.cern.ch/press/PressReleases/Releases2010/PR07.10E.html Talking to a particle physicist last week, they need to calibrate the detectors and then it'll take a while to analysis any data they take. So it could be around a year before anything new or interesting...
Severian Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 The 7 TeV run should be quite productive. It won't find the Higgs unless it is quite heavy (unlikely). But it can potentially exclude the most basic supersymmetric theories up the squark/gluino masses of about 800GeV. That is pretty significant. We should have some interesting physics results this year. (I haven't been posting much lately since I am just back from the Institute of Physics' annual particle physics meeting in London, where we were discussing this sort of thing. The talks are all at http://www.hep.ucl.ac.uk/iop2010/program.php. Unfortunately, Dave Charlton's talk on LHC Status and First Data, which was probably the most pertinent for this discussion, seems to not be uploaded.)
mooeypoo Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 That is an AWESOME share, Severian, thanks! Most of the talks there are waaaaaaaaaaaaaay over my head, but I felt quite good understanding random few slides here and there, remembering some of my optics class and some of this semester's QM. If you have more of these, please share. And.. you guys seem to have eaten a lot in there, geesh, there was a coffee break or food all the time! ~moo
