Jerryt12 Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 atoms form bonds with each other to be stable, right? If so, how come substances like hydrocarbon are so volatile? Souldn't it be stable?
Mr Skeptic Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Hydrocarbon molecules are fairly stable. They're volatile because the intermolecular forces between them are weak. This is largely because carbon and hydrogen have a very similar electronegativity. 1
alex folen Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 volatile is a human definition for earthligs - stp in front of us. "stable" chemistry/physics speaking, is different.
