jryan Posted April 20, 2010 Posted April 20, 2010 I as an American found it somewhat funny and troubling at the same time when I mentioned "Tories" in a discussion with my wife the other day and had my 7 year old perk up and say that she had read about Tories in a book recently at school. In the book there was a little girl protagonist fighting the evil Tories to save some parkland from construction. I can only assume that it was some young readers book of British origin. She couldn't remember the name of the book, but would such a book be common in the UK? I would ask her to check it out next time so I could see it but I don't want her to waste her book choice on such a book just to satisfy my political curiosity.
Icefire Posted April 20, 2010 Posted April 20, 2010 Tories is also the nickname of the Canadian Conservative party, but I don't know of that book. It rings a bell, but just the "saving the park" part.

As an American, you might not know that during the American Revolution, the people who supported the British Empire were called "Tories" or "Loyalists". Americans were not too fond of them, especially after winning said war.
jryan Posted April 21, 2010 Author Posted April 21, 2010 I knew that as well. But I'm fairly certain it wasn't a Revolutionary War era story about Tories bulldozing a public park.
insane_alien Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 did you ever think that, as a childrens book, it might not have anything to do with politics?
bascule Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 Unfortunately, at least on this side of the pond, children's books aren't exempt from politics:
Pangloss Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 Doh, I clicked to look inside but nothing happened!
insane_alien Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 i feel a little sick after seeing that. i certainly won't be buying books like that for my future kids.
Phi for All Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 i feel a little sick after seeing that. i certainly won't be buying books like that for my future kids.It could be worse. They could have a kid's book called, "Why Mommy is a Democrat and why Daddy is Wrong".
john5746 Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 Or "You will burn in hell if you don't believe this book"
