Even with today's massive expansion of the estimated rate, it would still take over 50 days to exceed the Exxon Valdez spill.

I think we'll just have to wait, wade through the obligatory weeping Greenpeace activists and see just how bad it is.

it seems like thus far there's more of a fear of environmental cost than a reality. Even the media has noted the shrinkage of the slick

This has all the earmarks of a media event that ends up setting policy due to nothing substantive or scientific, just emotional public opinion.

I have to ask... Do you ever look back on comments like these... you know... like 6 weeks later... and find that you could have expressed yourself in a better way? I wonder sometimes if you're the type of man who regrets making such comments, or if you really don't care.

I thought it might be interesting to revive this thread in light of more recent developments. For one thing it looks like my speculation that the spill might never cause much damage has proven false -- it looks like a pretty terrible event for a wide range of areas.

Phew. Please disregard the above. Good grief, man. You had me nervous there for a second. :)

Thanks; I knew I had to say something about that because I really did stick my opinion out there in the wrong direction earlier. I realize it's not the end of the world or anything, and I don't think Republicans should blow things out of proportion now any more than environmentalists might have done earlier, but having just gotten back from the Gulf coast I've seen first hand how dependent on the ocean we all are, and it's not going to be pretty. I completely agree with those who say that we need to take every step to ensure that this doesn't happen again.
