inamorata Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 Im running IE, and, frankly, it irritates me. Spyware, adware, etc. Ive heard that Firefox is better, but can someone in the know give me some advice please? Continue with IE, or is the change to Firefox really worth it? What are the benefits I would gain or the disadvantages? Thankyou
Severian Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 I prefer IE, but Firefow is free, so don't trust me, try it out and see!
inamorata Posted August 23, 2004 Author Posted August 23, 2004 Excellent, thankyou I figured there would be a thread about this already, somewhere
5614 Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 well obvioulsy firefox is better, everyone who knows about different computer programs knows that. it has better protection against everything, is more user-friendly and protects you more. however, im using IE because, IE has never given me any problems, i do not have problems with ads or with spyware, therefore i have never changed, however, if you do have problems with IE, then go firefoz, and as said earlier, its free
5614 Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 oh yeah, forgot to say that firefox also runs slightly slower than IE due to its intergrated security features [pop-up blocker & no ad/spy-ware i think it has a built in google task bar, as much as this seems useful, i dont like toolbars, there are flaws in many, and several trojans take advantages of, plus they can record data about what sites you've been on etc. although google is likely to be safe, to those using firefox; can you remove the google task bar?
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 No, but all it does is automatically load the search page. You type in the search and hit enter, and it takes you to the results. As far as I know it works like the meta search engines that query other engines for results, and I don't think you can get trojans through that. Also, firefox is FASTER, not slower, it loads pages better.
Callipygous Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 Im running IE' date=' and, frankly, it irritates me. Spyware, adware, etc. Ive heard that Firefox is better, but can someone in the know give me some advice please? Continue with IE, or is the change to Firefox really worth it? What are the benefits I would gain or the disadvantages? Thankyou [/quote'] if you have popups that show up even when your not browsing firefox will not help. if your just trying to stop the ones that show up when you visit certain sites, then firefox will be great.
5614 Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 so you cant get rid of the google bar? thats annoying and are you sure its faster? i mean, why would it be? its got soo much stuff running security pop-up blocker, why's it faster than IE which doesnt have any of it!
NSX Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 so you cant get rid of the google bar? thats annoying and are you sure its faster? i mean' date=' why would it be? its got soo much stuff running security pop-up blocker, why's it faster than IE which doesnt have any of it![/quote'] Yes, you can remove the google/search bar. Right-click --> Customize --> Then drag the google bar into the box of stuff. Then it will be gone from your browser. They're roughly the same on my computer. While viewing this exact same page: Firefox uses 26,196K of memory, and IE 26,008K. I'm pretty sure there are add-ons to IE to have a google search bar, security pop-up blocker and the like nowadays.
bloodhound Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 first of all. the new SP2 for windows xp has an integrated pop up blocker for IE.
Sayonara Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 Wow, they've really caught up! Next you'll be telling me that IE has sorted out its DOM and adheres to W3 standards.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 And that SP2 won't keep games and applications (including the ENTIRE WordPerfect suite, which comes standard with some computers) from working properly or working AT ALL.
Dave Posted August 24, 2004 Posted August 24, 2004 Next you'll be telling me that IE has sorted out its DOM and adheres to W3 standards. Don't be silly. (btw, Firefox/Mozilla > *)
blike Posted August 24, 2004 Posted August 24, 2004 I use firefox; it's godlike. Twas only a few months ago I was using plain old MSIE. Then I started getting crap that would reset my homepage to porn sites and search engines, and redirect me all over the place. I switched to avant browser (MSIE+ essentially). It worked well, but it was still based on IE. It blocked popups, but not all of them. The stinking redirects and homepage changers still were infesting me. Then I made the decision to convert to firefox. I've since forgot what popups are. I was on my girlfriend's machine the other day and a strange thing appeared on my screen. It seemed to be some sort of advertisement. I was shocked. SWITCH TO FIREFOX. The only complaint I have is that it loads images a little bit slower than IE. But thats probably because my machine is mad old.
Phi for All Posted August 24, 2004 Posted August 24, 2004 I'm on Firefox 9.3 and I love it. It's got all these wonderful extensions that you can download like Adblock, Image Zoom, Single Window, that really customize your browsing. The window loads slightly slower but the time you save with security makes it more than worth it.
AtomicMX Posted August 24, 2004 Posted August 24, 2004 I'm on Firefox 9.3 Wow the time flies there too... the last version i remmeber was the 0.9.3 :P:P:P:P I use firefox, and well, i use linux so i wouldn't bother to port IE, but yet in windows i would use it.... It is so.... good.
Sayonara Posted August 24, 2004 Posted August 24, 2004 Does anyone use the Web Developer Toolbar extension? It rawks.
Sayonara Posted August 24, 2004 Posted August 24, 2004 It's a very handy toolbar with a load of super tools on it. In Firefox go to Tools > Extensions > Get More Extensions It ought to be in the "top extensions" bit.
jordan Posted August 24, 2004 Posted August 24, 2004 I use firefox; it's godlike. Then I made the decision to convert to firefox. I've since forgot what popups are. I was on my girlfriend's machine the other day and a strange thing appeared on my screen. It seemed to be some sort of advertisement. I was shocked. Indeed. I've switched to Firefox and there are no popups while I'm using it. Unfortunatly, if I leave the computer for a few minutes with nothing open, I get 20 popups out of nowhere. Oh well, I'm looking to get a new computer soon, one that is mine so no one else can screw it up. Maybe I'll start a thread asking for suggestions soon... Oh, and one more thing. Can I uninstall IE or will it not let me/cause problems.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted August 24, 2004 Posted August 24, 2004 http://www.litepc.com/download.html Scroll down and look at them.
Phi for All Posted August 24, 2004 Posted August 24, 2004 I would keep IE around just because there are some things that need it. Do you run Adblock with Firefox?
