rigney Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 (edited) How long will it be before a parent telling a bedtime story to their children will be shocked to hear one of them ask: Mommy, what are holidays? The Mom replies: Where did you hear such a dirty word? But yes, there was a time when Holidays were a fun thing to do. Let me see!! There was, Christmas, Easter, Memorial Day, the 4th of July, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and even more, but I cant remember their names at the moment. Some years back the government thought we were taking too much time off from work and decided we really didn't need Holidays, so "bingo" they're gone. Does anyone honestly believe this could happen? swansont Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 Whether you work on a holiday is not up to the federal government, unless you work for the federal government (and even then, some federal employees work on holidays). It's basically between you and your employer. There are some restrictions - your employer has to try and accommodate your religious beliefs, if that's possible, and you have some legal leverage in that regard. But if you work for someone that's open on e.g. Thanksgiving and New Year's, you might be working then. Or you can quit. That's not up to the government. However, a lot of places follow the guidelines of federal holidays. I think anyone in Congress introducing a reduction in Federal holidays would be committing an act of political suicide.
insane_alien Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 you have to remember that the government works (or at least should) for the people. if they make decisions unpopular with the people then they will not get re-elected.

Well, except for abolishing all elections... the people tend to hate that but have no recourse. Not that I'm saying that could or would happen.
