Riotcheif Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 hey just got some redox related questions lead acid storage battery consists of plates of spongy metallic lead and plates of spongy lead dioxide immersed in a solution of sulfuric acid. As the battery discharges the metallic lead and lead dioxide are converted to lead sulfate. write the balance equation for each half reaction in battery: oxidation : Reduction: write balanced chem equation for overall redox reaction equation: balance this reaction in acid solution or base? how many electrons were transferred in the reaction? analyze a lead acid storage battery /identify the anode : cathode: salt bridge: calculate the voltage of the cell? explain why testing the density of the fluid in a car battery indicates if the battery needs to be recharged? if a lead acid battery is completely discharged, the sulfuric acid solution in hte cell is very dilute. could the battery be rejuvenated simply by removing the dilute sulfuric acid and replacing it with more concentrated sulfuric acid? why? suppose that you attempted to make a battery out of spongy metallic lead and spongy lead sulfate.. would it work? why/why not? how about if you attempted with spongy lead dioxide and spongy lead sulfate? thanks greatly appreciate it
cypress Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 Hmm, that looks like homework..... How about you try first and I'll help where you get stuck.
Riotcheif Posted June 18, 2010 Author Posted June 18, 2010 LOL xD I can't get past the first part, because the way they provide the info is confusing to me
cypress Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 Start with Wiki, it does a pretty good job with these fact based issues. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lead–acid_battery. Most of the answers are on that page. See how far you can get.
Genecks Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 (edited) This is the kind of stuff that's valuable in life if you own a car. Give it a whirl, original poster. It's a word problem. But you need to take that word problem and turn it into a chemical equation. Sulfuric acid is what chemical formula? Lead dioxide is what chemical formula? Taking word problems and turning them into symbols and math becomes common place in science with more scientific training. Also, this sentence should have a comma: As the battery discharges, the metallic lead and lead dioxide are converted to lead sulfate. Edited June 18, 2010 by Genecks
Newbies_Kid Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 write the balance equation for each half reaction in battery:oxidation : Reduction: This is the key to answer this question. After you get the equation you can use this table to calculate the potential:
