Guest ngilman Posted August 27, 2004 Posted August 27, 2004 Hi, Has anyone heard of a layer of boric acid being used as a heat shield? I know it is often used in solution and other composites to act as a fire retardant, but what I'm looking for is any reference to boric acid, by itself, being used as an insulator. Maybe like a layer of boric acid protecting the components of a flight data recorder? Heard of anything like this?
YT2095 Posted August 27, 2004 Posted August 27, 2004 not in black box recorders no, but boric acid will withstand tremendous amounts of heat! the boron bead test for example in Chemistry, the bead will show the transitional element color (D block) and yet it won`t decay in a bunsen burner however pure boric acid alone isn`t an ideal protectant, there are other borates far superior to it, there`s a likelyhood that those are used
