kenel Posted July 12, 2002 Posted July 12, 2002 On June 15, 2002, an asteroid the size of a football field, dubbed 2002MN, came within 120,000 kilometers of hitting Earth. The rocky body was traveling at a speed of 36,800 kilometers per hour--and if it struck, it would have wreaked as much destruction as a nuclear weapon. It was one of the closest passes ever recorded for an object of that size. And astronomers didn't detect it till three days afterward. Should we be concentrating more on possible Middle Eastern Terrorism, or Astronomical Terrorism?
fafalone Posted July 12, 2002 Posted July 12, 2002 Both. Near-Earth object collision detectors cover about less than 5% of the sky, unfortunately watching the skies costs more than an administration with the standard ignorance of science (with the exception of JFK) has. Terror strikes from the middle-east are far more probable, but as the recent uncovering of prescience of 9/11 attacks have shown us, we should be watching what is deemed improbable.
Guest Adam Posted July 13, 2002 Posted July 13, 2002 yea government wants your money to save their asses, i knew something like this will happen. Just look at the STAR WARS PROGRAM , the regan said long time ago we need to build a defense system in space against possible alien attack sO? , they did Yes they did use that money for their own space projects. Never build a LASER BEAM DEFENSE PLAN. My Point: The astrologists can find planets far far away, but they can't detect a football field size asteroid this time at this technology era. Well the Government made this up , they are trying out this idea of POPULATION BEING AFRAID OF ASTEROID COLLISIONS ANDFEEL CONFIDENT ABOUT THEIR TAX MONEY going on a defense project. B U L L S H I T or B U S H S H I T ? you decide By the way it's easy to scare people that in whatever number of years an asteroid just like the one that hit earth 45mil years ago will strike again!, except there was never proof for that asteroid THERE NEVER WAS AN ASTEROID LIKE THAT, it's planet x Some stupid theories: The Vatiscam and scientists came up to this solution that the NOAHs Rain Flood was really the water from asteroid. Yea that sounds easy to say to satisfy both sides, except SUCH IMPACT would not cause rain and flood in 40 days, it would whipe everything in one minute.
fafalone Posted July 13, 2002 Posted July 13, 2002 There have been several near-miss asteroids. There are thousands of asteroids around, are we forgetting the "asteroid belt" just a few AU's away? Long range data is collected very slowly, and is easier to collect because everything we're looking at emits light. An asteroid does not emit light. The giant crater in south america is proof. Believing this planet x crap and taking all your knowledge from far-left conspiracy theories makes you just about the most ignorant person to ever live.
