atinymonkey Posted September 1, 2004 Posted September 1, 2004 God's not happy with Florida, is he? O_o
5614 Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 have you been evacuated? whats happening down there?
Skye Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 If he's been evacuated he's making a decent effort to get online and post.
YT2095 Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 and it`s the second one in nearly as many weeks! poor old Blike
5614 Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 yes, poor guy Skye: he could have been evacuated, in a hotel, using an internet cafe computer, who knows?!?
bloodhound Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 how come its francis. i thought it was frances? hope pple wont blame france for this as well
blike Posted September 4, 2004 Author Posted September 4, 2004 I'm still here It's supposed to hit us later tonight/tomorrow morning.
5614 Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 so arent you going to evacuate or something? go somewhere safe: "It's supposed to hit us later tonight/tomorrow morning." you make it sound like you might miss it if you sleep late or something! edit: and good to hear that your alive still! [and hopefully for a lot more time as well!]
blike Posted September 4, 2004 Author Posted September 4, 2004 No I'm not going to evacuate. Since I'm on the other side of the state, we should only encounter tropical storm force winds. See that little notch about midway up the state (the top notch) and on the left hand side? Thats where I live.
5614 Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 well make sure your windows are shut then! in a thread about hurricane charlie, you said you was gonna take some photos of it, did you? or was it not near enough to you? if you did get some, please can you post em, either here, or in the other thread on hurrican charlie: http://www.scienceforums.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5389
bloodhound Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 how are the categories defined anyway? what is catergory 4 ?
5614 Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 it is to do with how powerful it is, you cant say how is it difined, its like a centigrade or a meter or even a mile, its a measurement
jordan Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 It's out of 5, though. 5 is the worst. This one has since been downgraded to a 2 I believe.
5614 Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 it was a 3 according to the UK newspapers this morning, but it could be carming down! which would be good!
Skye Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 Yay, no evacuation. Or are evacuations a fun kind of adventure?
jordan Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 it was a 3 according to the UK newspapers this morning, but it could be carming down! which would be good! blike would be more qualified to say than I am, but I think the danger of this hurricane is that it is moving rather slowely. Therefore, the slower windspeeds are sustained over a longer period and then so is the tidal surge. That can be bad.
bloodhound Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 it is to do with how powerful it is, you cant say how is it difined, its like a centigrade or a meter or even a mile, its a measurement what do u mean you cant say how is it defined. everything is defined. even a standard kg is defined.
jordan Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 And I'd imagine that where blike is located wouldn't take the full force of those winds/surge/etc. Seems like it could be rather fun to get to experience once or twice (but not within a two week period. That would just be annoying).
jordan Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 Yep. Question: With hurricanes rotating, the means at landfall one side is always pushing inland and the other side is pushing back out to sea. What effects would the tidal surge experience when the winds are pushing back out to sea instead of inland? I know the wind speed isn't the only thing that effects (affects?) tidal surge, but might it be strong enough to actual push the water in the other direction?
Thales Posted September 5, 2004 Posted September 5, 2004 Actually its a little off topic but the standard Kg has no relevence in nature and is an enitriely man made measurement. There is nothing that defines a kg other than the weight that sits in the musuem somewhere in france. Oh and jordan, as far as I'm aware once the Hurricane hits landfall it isn't sustained very long as the warm tropical water that drives it is no longer present. It is an interesting question though, I'll see what I can find.
bloodhound Posted September 5, 2004 Posted September 5, 2004 its not just defined by that weight. its defined by a weight of a cylinder of certain dimension of a certain compound.
palebluehuh Posted September 6, 2004 Posted September 6, 2004 No I'm not going to evacuate. Since I'm on the other side of the state, we should only encounter tropical storm force winds. See that little notch about midway up the state (the top notch) and on the left hand side? Thats where I live. Hey, you attend USF, too? Coo-ool. I'm sticking it out here, too, avoiding the few of my roommates crazy enough to stay here with me. I've been subsisting on Cheerios and Coke, since they seem to have closed the food places up. Hurricane Francis passed without major incident here (though the wind was spectacular). A few downed limbs and a lot of really enormous puddles. Other than that, I think we survived it.
