Is potential energy real?

Is it real or an idea? If it isn't real does that mean kinetic energy isn't real either? If kinetic energy is real does potential energy have to be real as well?

What do you mean by 'real'? Energy isn't a substance; it's a property.

I think the correct way to think is that energy is a mathematical concept of our own devise, that is incredibly useful in our descriptions and understanding of our world.
