deltanova Posted September 5, 2004 Posted September 5, 2004 i am a bit annoyed, i can get onto this site from my home computer, BUT when i try to access it from the school computer the administrator will not allow it because it is to them classed in the group "pornography" ah well, such is life,
5614 Posted September 5, 2004 Posted September 5, 2004 well then go to your system admin, and show it to him..... thats what im gonna do, we're getting a new ISP or sumin this school year, which is stricter on blocking with the policy, its all blocked until they clear it! which means whilsts we can use google, all of the links will be blocked, it sounds like a crap system and will most likely result in this site being blocked, so then i'll go the system admin.
deltanova Posted September 5, 2004 Author Posted September 5, 2004 our schools on a thing called castnet, and its run from sydney, im 600km away from there, good idea but, ill go to the top bloke at school.
5614 Posted September 5, 2004 Posted September 5, 2004 yeah, just tell your admin how into science and computers you are.... show him the computer science part, especially the 'i wanna learn everything' that would be good to show a teacher, im basically telling everyone about everything, BIOS, HDDs, IRCs, Plug-ins, cracks, hacks, dual booting, the admin would approve!
Dave Posted September 5, 2004 Posted September 5, 2004 System operators don't usually work on logic. They're more like the BOFH than most would realise
5614 Posted September 5, 2004 Posted September 5, 2004 yes, but if i wanted to unblock a site, dont go onto the jokes thread, you have to show them the up side of what you want, like [for a sys admin] how you can expand your IT knowledge! and as a bonus point for your side, all the science you can learn from it!
Dave Posted September 5, 2004 Posted September 5, 2004 And they're (probably) going to say: "well, as much as we'd like to, it's against our IT policy, blah blah blah blah" - i.e. "go away and stop bothering me".
5614 Posted September 5, 2004 Posted September 5, 2004 i dont think so, this is a soley education site, i think he's got a good chance, when i heard about the new sys my schools getting, read post #2, i thought if this were blocked, i'd have a good chance of getting it unblocked. we'll see when i go back to school tomorrow.
Dave Posted September 5, 2004 Posted September 5, 2004 It could be argued that the GD forum is not a place of educational resource though. This site isn't all about education
5614 Posted September 5, 2004 Posted September 5, 2004 yes, precisely, thats why you show him the computer science part first [which is his subject], and then the sciencey part [more education], and NOT the jokes, which is part of GD.
Dave Posted September 5, 2004 Posted September 5, 2004 And then what happens when he finds this thread?
5614 Posted September 5, 2004 Posted September 5, 2004 do you really think that a system admin is going to search through all the thousands of threads?
Dave Posted September 5, 2004 Posted September 5, 2004 No, but it's certainly one at the top of GD. It's likely he's going to click on someting like that because it seems a bit off-topic and it's at the top of the forums page.
5614 Posted September 5, 2004 Posted September 5, 2004 but if you show the admin the home page where it shows the active topics list, then the GD stuff doesnt appear there.... whereas computing and science does, this would be a good page to show.
5614 Posted September 6, 2004 Posted September 6, 2004 my school is fine, the new system is really stupid, all google images work [leading to the ability for rude searches, im not that kinda person though], some games sites are blocked, but others are still open, you can play game, but not go onto the game [shop] website, thats just dumb! this is open not blocked though. dunno bout the chatroom, all applets will probably be disabled by default.
