Can the Aurora be heard?

Can the Aurora be heard? Some people report hearing sounds when the aurora is intense. Some also speculate this is connected with hearing meteors. i can sometimes hear meteors but I've never seen or heard the aurora. Can it be possible and is there a mechanism for this?
