Is the water table rising in Giza since they opened the pyramids?

I thought I read that recently the sites were in danger because of unstable ground and moisture. Am I wrong?.

CNN) -- The wonders of the ancient world don't give up their secrets easily. But the most advanced modern technology is being put to use in Egypt to answer questions about the most advanced ancient engineering -- Egypt's Great Pyramid.

The National Geographic Society, using the same kind of robot used to search for survivors in the ruins of the World Trade Center, is trying to solve a mystery that lies deep in the bowels of the 4,500-year-old Great Pyramid of Giza.

Up a tiny square tunnel is a stone hatch with copper handles that was discovered in 1872. No one knows the purpose of the shaft, and no one knows what lies behind the hatch.

A mini-robot, dubbed the pyramid rover, has been called in. This modern marvel is about 5.5 inches wide and 1 foot long. Its four sets of treads, two above and two below, engage the bottom and the top of the tunnel to give it traction.

"It has to be an extraordinary engineering feat to go up a 40-degree, 200-foot shaft," he said. "It also has to carry an extraordinary amount of scientific equipment in the lightest possible vehicle in a design that allows it to fit in the shaft and to keep it from slipping down."

Crawling up the shaft at about five feet per minute, the rover is maneuvered remotely from a makeshift control room in the pyramid's queen's chamber.

Hoping to see many wondrous things

Ground-penetrating radar and ultra-sound can, at best, get just below the surface of the pyramid.

On Monday night, the team hopes to dig deeper into the mystery. The rover will insert a fiber optic camera through cracks in the hatch to see what is on the other side.

CNN in China

BEIJING, China -- A team of Chinese scientists is to head out to the far west of the country to investigate a mystery pyramid that local legend says is a launch tower left by aliens from space.

Nine scientists will travel this month to probe the origins of the 50-60 meter (165-198 ft) tall structure -- dubbed "the ET relics" -- in the western province of Qinghai, China's state-run Xinhua agency said on Wednesday.

The mystery pyramid sits on Mount Baigong, has three caves with triangular openings on its facade and is filled with red-hued pipes leading into the mountain and a nearby salt water lake, Xinhua said.

Rusty iron scraps, pipes and unusually shaped stones are scattered around the inhospitable and largely uninhabited area, it said.

A research fellow at a nearby observatory of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Yang Ji, told Xinhua the theory the pyramid was created by extra terrestrials was "understandable and worth looking into."

But a study carried out by a local smeltery suggests the pipes are very old, Liu Shaolin, the engineer who carried out the analysis, told Xinhua.

I'm looking forward to the Monday, 9/16 TV broadcast of the pyramid research. I,ll look for it in the TV guide.

I'd like more info on the Chinese research when you get it.

Thanks Zarkov

Yes, those two articles were very interesting.

I look forward to hearing more about what lies beyond the stone hatch.

Not to mention the alien encampment thingy.

On the north of the mountain are twin lakes dubbed as the "lover Lakes", one with fresh water and the other with salty water.

"ET" pyramid, caves and pipes

The so-called ET relics structure is located on the south bank of the salty lake. It looks like a pyramid and is between 50 to 60 meters high.

At the front of the pyramid are three caves with triangular openings. The cave in the middle is the biggest, with its floor standing two meters above the ground and its top eight meters above the ground.

This cave is about six meters in depth. Inside there is a half-pipe about 40 centimeters in diameter tilting from the top to the inner end of the cave. Another pipe of the same diameter goes into the earth with only its top visible above the ground.

Above the cave are a dozen pipes of various diameters which run into the mountain.

All the pipes are red brownish, the same color as that of surrounding rocks.

The two smaller caves have collapsed and are inaccessible.

Scattered about the caves and on the bank of the salty lake area are a large number of rusty scraps, pipes of various diameters and strangely shaped stones.

Some of the pipes run into the lake.

The result (of pipe analysis) shows that they are made up of 30 per cent ferric oxide with a large amount of silicon dioxide and calcium oxide. Eight per cent of the content could not be identified.

"The large content of silicon dioxide and calcium oxide is a result of long interaction between iron and sandstone, which means the pipes must be very old," said Liu Shaolin, the engineer who did the analysis.

Yea, I read about that awhile ago. Why don't they think they're human made?

I expect it is just a beat up. It really would depend on the age of the site. but is it interesting as to the height of the ?pile of stones, ( human? effort ) and the questionable intended purpose, considering that there is a salt water AND a fresh water lake nearby, in the middle of nowhere, and at a HIGH altitude.

It can't be too important, can it?

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) -CNN- Scientists using a robot have discovered yet another door deep inside the Great Pyramid, Egypt's head archaeologist said.

The discovery followed the September 17 revelation on live television of a chamber behind a similar stone door in an 8-inch square shaft in the pyramid Pharaoh Khufu built more than 4,000 years ago.

"This find in the northern shaft, coupled with last week's discovery ... in the southern shaft, represents the first major new information about the Great Pyramid in more than a century," said Zahi Hawass, director of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, on Monday.

The 452-foot-high pyramid is the largest of three that form a group with the Sphinx in the desert outside Cairo.

A camera thrust through the south shaft's door last week revealed what appeared to be another door on the other side of a 9-inch-square chamber, for a total of three so far in the pyramid.

Hawass said the south shaft's first door and the door just discovered in the north shaft were each 211 feet from the large central chamber.

How on earth could anyone 211 feet up a 9 inch square shaft, open or close a stone door??

One on each side, what is the reason, unless it was to air the insides when construction was in progress, then they were shut so that the water process could be efficient. ???

Posted

Rad E, I expect the doors were closed from the outside, when the outer layers of blocks were added, once the insides were finished.

What were they used for then Rad E ??

Since the builders had to build in layers they put the door in while they stood above it. Then they continued to build the shaft untill they stood above the next door and placed it. Then they continued to build beyond. Then they put all the good stuff in and enclosed it. Papers on super water and maps and maybe even a lawn mower and weed eater. Maybe?

How are the pyramids at Giza broken? It seems like all it needs to work is water to be heated.

What the bloody hell is "sacred water"? Is it like holy water?
