Guest 5485 Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 My explorer mem usage is at 35mb. sounds high of it! what do u think?
5614 Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 since i turned my computer on about half an hour ago, the max explorer has used it 23MB, and is currently running on 21MB. not sure why your is soo high, probably because you have more explorer processes running. [explorer can load up its own programs which run inside the explorer program itself]
5614 Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 oh, maybe mine is just low, i'll monitor it over the next few days and see if it raises.
Guest 5485 Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 i just restarted (with all non essential programs running at its at 19mb). i must of had loads of crap running at the time and i didnt restart for a few days. thax anyway
5614 Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 may i ask which stuff you started without? as this will help others and me! if theres [even at my low mem useage] there is something i can delete.
5614 Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 if you use windows task manage, view>select columns>tick 'user objects' i have 74 running for explorer.exe this is what i was talking about earlier [explorer opening programs, which is why its best to restart your computer once every one or two days]
5614 Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 different inter-explorer programs use different amount of mem themselves, i have less programs than you but yet am running at a higher mem useage, i will try and think of a way i can view inter-explorer programs running, in the hope that some can be shut down. mine is still running at 21MB. you will notice that kedas's has increased. this happens with normal computing useage, gradually it builds up [when your active] which is why its good to reboot, coz then it resets itself again.... obviously there will be a minimum it can go, without the user changing what programs start at start-up.
5614 Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 143 at 21mb woa, i have half as many as you [if you subtract half to the amount im running ] but yet we are still running at the same 21MB. interesting
badchad Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 I'm at work right now so I don't know how much it will help. But there is a guy named "blackviper" who runs a website filled with tweaks to speed up your comp. (I'd post the site but I don't want to spam, just google the nickname). If you go to his site and look at the "windows service configurations" on the left hand side, he has a guide which allows you to turn off almost every non-essential feature of windows. IMO turning off the extra's speeds things up immensly. But like I said, I'm at work and I don't have the tweaks running on this comp. WHen I get home I'll let you know if it helps.
5614 Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 tweaks from unknown users can be unsafe and open back doors in your computer, i will look at the site all the same. your evidence [of looking at your computer when you get home] is useless evidence. every computer varies, so you cant say, as demonstarted by 5485, restarting your computer can know it down by 14MB. all windows components can be accessed and switched off through windows itself, thats why i have 72 process running in explorer and 5485 has 143 and keda has 101 processes with in explorer. really, microsoft isnt that bad, advance users shouldnt have problems customising the OS to work perfectly well. indeed i've never had problems with my OS. [currently windows XP home, previously windows 98 and several older 3.1, and dos computers]
badchad Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 it was just a suggestion, really, it makes no difference to me whether or not you want to check the site out. They're not outrageous tweaks, just changing some settings in windows. The site is well known and I've seen it referenced before, whether that adds to his "credibility" is up to you. As you said "all windows components can be accessed and switched off through windows itself". All this guy did was spend some time reading, and published a huge list of things you could safely turn off; after I switched settings, I now run about 14 processes after a re-boot. Helped my performace. Just offering advice.
5614 Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 dont get me wrong, its good advice, keep posting stuff like that, really, just pointing out some facts that popped into my head! good work though, thanks for the name, i go google it.
badchad Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 Basically all you do is go to: start->settings->control panel->administrative tools->services Then you screw around with those settings. There's a description of each so you can get an idea of what you're doing (if all else fails you can just switch it back on). As I said before all the "tips" worked for me. I'm just curious to hear other's opinions. (Those whom obviously have more computer knowledge then I).
5614 Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 you can also go start>run>msconfig>tabstart-up and edit some stuff there, this stuff is different to the stuff in the service as described in post #17 also: start>run>msconfig>tabservices although this seems to overlap with the other two previously mentioned things.
5614 Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 i find that prc-viewer is the best process viewer around. one of the better functions is the ability to (a) trace programs to their roots, from where they can be examined and possibly deleted [good for finding viruses] (b) when you tell it to end a process, it says 'are you sure' and then ends the process, unlike the windows task manager, which never actually does it, this will kill explorer.exe if you want it to, you can turn off your computer using this program. visit: http://www.teamcti.com/pview/prcview.htm the download is at the top of the page in the middle, can't miss it, the rest is stuff about it, i really recommend the program.
bloodhound Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 that black viper site is a trusted site and recommended by many system admins that i have talked to over the net. There are many things running that if you turned them off you wouldn't notice. makes the boot up time much faster.
5614 Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 woa, that site is very good, good tips, shame i've alread done most of the things, i was hoping for a faster computer, still a few things i can do, i doubt it will make much of a noticeable difference
Dave Posted September 11, 2004 Posted September 11, 2004 Currently using about 25mb, so not an awful lot.
5614 Posted September 11, 2004 Posted September 11, 2004 mines up to 82 internal processes but only at 13MB, so it varies quite a lot, even in one computer. i recommend black viper, its a good site.
5614 Posted September 12, 2004 Posted September 12, 2004 this seems a good place to make people aware of yet another virus trojan thingy. not that new but tricks many. safe processes: iexplore.exe explorer.exe unsafe processes: iexplorer.exe explore.exe notice the different spelling there are many different adware programs that try to immitate system processes. adaware.exe is dangerous [not the security program] iedriver.exe rundll.exe rundll16.exe scvhost.exe win32us.exe update.exe system.exe intdel.exe are just a few examples or hundreds of unsafe processes which run pretending to be system processes. you may recognise the above processes as running on your system, before panicking, check the spelling..... hopefully i havent spelt any wrong, if you have one of the dangerous processes running, post it and i'll double check my spelling and tell you about what you have.
