Primarygun Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 Ionic compound decomposes when polar molecules attract them. How about non-polar molecules? What forces make the non-polar molecules dissolve in non-polar molecules solvent but not in polar?
mak10 Posted October 8, 2004 Posted October 8, 2004 dispersion forces. non-polar molecules, when mixed, set up induced dipole-dipole attractions (van dar waals forces) which are much weaker than the ionic bonds in ions and permanent dipole attractions of polar molecules.
