ewmon Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 News and video of mysterious missile launch off California coast Well, here's a one-of-a-kind news item (let's hope). Any real news from the military is missing from this situation. Someone (ATCs, NORAD, etc) must know where the launch came from, how fast it was going, and where the missile came down ... they're just not saying right now. They're obvious not concerned that it's some sort of threat, so I'm leaning toward it being a US military mistake. Oops!! From it's trajectory, they can estimate its minimum weight and size.
Moontanman Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 Maybe the Chinese military is showing off one of their super silent submarines by test launching a missile so close to the US while the prez is out of town???
ajb Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 They're obvious not concerned that it's some sort of threat... Or they do not want to cause a panic.
imatfaal Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Anyone have any idea what sort of aircraft is in the sky at 1:35 of the video. The pilot must have had a pretty spectacular and scary view (unless I have my perspectives wrong)
Rhiaden Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Isn't it the same phenomenon as in the first post here Perspective and Contrails
CaptainPanic Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Isn't it the same phenomenon as in the first post here Perspective and Contrails Why wouldn't both be military missiles which are kept quiet? I've seen thousands of contrails at sunset (I live in a densely populated part of the world - lots of planes here), but I have never seen one that was much wider towards the horizon. Not like that anyway.
Sisyphus Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 The question "who launched the missile" assumes it was a missile. I think the optical illusion explanation is pretty convincing.
Athena Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/11/10/national/main7041217.shtml This link says it was a plane and explains the optical illusion. It says it was moving too slow to be a missile. I think a check of airports should clarify this matter. A plane like that wouldn't come from someone's back yard and leave without a flight plan. 1
Rhiaden Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 There is a record of a flight in the region at the time AWE808 This seems to be the likely cause, there is even a video of the flight on the 9th, with a contrail like the one on the 8th, blog link below Blog infographic
The Bear's Key Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 Two groups of people for any mysterious event: those who imagine all sorts of plots, and those who fear the strange and dismiss it as common stuff. I wouldn't know of any reason for someone to launch a missile randomly, or by error. I can suppose, however, that a plane doesn't from near an ocean's level starting point -- as the news video shows it moving.
Sisyphus Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 an ocean's level starting point Otherwise known as "the horizon?"
insane_alien Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 I can suppose, however, that a plane doesn't from near an ocean's level starting point -- as the news video shows it moving. by that logic, ships coming over the horizon rise up out of the water after having been submerged before and ships going away from you convieniently spring a leak when the get to the horizon. its a matter of realising that the earth is far from flat.
rigney Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 How easily we are duped into an irrational mind set because of nothing more than guess work. Who ever brought this out should have their A-- kicked. I've watched many missile firings, beginning in 1960 'til 1995. This was not a missile! Next it will be the "little green men" all over again!!

Rhiaden Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 ! Next it will be the "little green men" all over again!! I hope it is little green men, as I voted for that option in the poll!
rigney Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 I'll have you know we are not little or green and we know who you are..... Sad part is, I'm inclined to believe you. "Well, just a little bit".
The Bear's Key Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 Otherwise known as "the horizon?" by that logic, ships coming over the horizon rise up out of the water after having been submerged before and ships going away from you convieniently spring a leak when the get to the horizon. its a matter of realising that the earth is far from flat. It had seemed as if there's ocean behind it, but perhaps not. Difficult to tell. But if the object's really that far, the size is even larger than perceived in the video. Plus, why aren't such trails a more common event -- on the horizon of lands as well? Instead, everyone's response is as if they're seeing it the first time ever. How easily we are duped into an irrational mind set because of nothing more than guess work. Who ever brought this out should have their A-- kicked. I've watched many missile firings, beginning in 1960 'til 1995. Why? It's a deputy Secretary of Defense who claimed it's a "big" missile. Should be his fault. And what if a real missile had been launched, such as the Delta II rocket nearby to it about four days earlier? Should it have gone unreported if no one knew who had launched it?
swansont Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 On the Daily Show, I saw that the photographer said he filmed it for 10 minutes or so. How does anybody leap to the conclusion that it's a missile, given that information?

How does anybody leap to the conclusion that it's a missile, given that information? Ha, yeah. Well, there's a good explanation at one website for the visual phenomenon.
Sisyphus Posted November 13, 2010 Posted November 13, 2010 Wow, the people in that jet following the same course at the same time are lucky they weren't hit by the missile!
amyhomeruler Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 If it wasn't a test from any neighboring country, I'd say it's North Korea. They love explosives and WMD. Even after that, we hear of their bombardment of South Korea's bordering island. It makes sense...
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 As mentioned earlier in the topic, it was a plane. The Air Force also has the capability to detect missile launches, anywhere in the world: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defense_Support_Program
Anura Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 (edited) This was not a missle but an aircraft of somekind. Why do we jump to conclusions? Edited December 4, 2010 by Anura
