I am interested in learning how slow dissolving tablets like the chlorine pool and toilet tablets work. Are there other compounds that work similarly when placed in water? any information would really help out.

I don't know how the products you've mentioned work. In slow release fertilizer or some medicine, the coating could be shellac, a natural resin and it said that it can be engineered to control the release time. It can be other resins or maybe cellulose related material too or other materials.

I am not well versed in Chemistry but from my limited experience ( mandatory college classes :), we did some studying with fatty acids. Since fats are not soluble in water, if you constructed a long lipid chain mixed with a chemical with a low solubility around 5 percent in water. If the two were mixed together in a compound and pressed would the result be a slow releasing substance? be kind in the responses please.
