about string theory ?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering. If the strings in string theory are vibrating in more than 3 dimensions and they are the fundamentals to which all particles are manifested thereby producing the 3D reality for which we live. Why is it that 'we' only experience '3 dimensions' of physical reality..

In other words, why do we only experience and perceive 3 dimensions of reality when reality itself (and ourselves) is, at that most fundamental level, made of strings - which vibrate in more than 3 dimensions...

Why don't we experience the number of dimensions for which reality itself is in..

I mean, shouldn't we experience the number of dimensions to which our own realty is in..

Per string theory, the space dimensions beyond the standard three are curled up so small that we are not aware of them. It's like a wire between two telephone poles. From far away, ithe wire looks like a line of one dimension. But up close, you can see that ithe wire has thickness; it's really cylindrical, so has other space dimensions.

I ME is correct. In the initial condition of the big bang. There would have been 10 dimensions of space time. These dimensions split up into 6 curled up dimensions (curled back upon themselves almost infinitely, I think down to the planck length). The other 4 dimensions are the ones that we experience today. 3 spacial dimensions and one of time. Since the particles that make us up are much larger than the planck length, they cannot slip into these other curled up dimensions. Eventually, if there proves to be a big crunch, these dimensions may expand back under the extreme pressures and temperatures and our universe could return, mended back into its original ten dimensional state.

Yes, so this is the idea of compactification.

Another idea is that we live on a 3-brane.

Or a combination of these is also possible.
