Zinc chloride battery, what's it made of?

lol. Yeah thats what gets me about comapnies etc, they say it cost too much to do things in abetter way, My answer is no matter how much money you have you cant buy something that isnt there, lol.

 

I'll get saving my zinc, I'll be 96 by 2070 I'll become one of those rich old men with young women on my arm after my money, lol. (keep dreaming)

ok i have just opend a battery and its got a lot of silvery soft metal paste inside what is it its one of those big D batteries

 

Edit: also inside the zinc cup there is a black casing im guessing this is manganese dioxide if so what can you do with manganese dioxide

 

Edit 2: also how dangerous is manganese dioxide because i have just read it is severly dangerous if inhaled ect

the inner rod of an alkaline cell is Zinc (atualy it`s Zinc plated brass) the paste is KOH, so don`t get any on your hands for too long, it`ll take your skin off and you won`t even feel it!

the cell case is ordinary steel (try the magnet test).

 

the inhalation of most chemicals can be dangerous, MnO2 is no exception.

is that all the black powder that the carbon electrodes are contained in? always wondered what that is, doesnt half make a mess when your trying to get the carbon out!

some one said that manganese dioxide + H2O2 will make oxygen and permanganaic acid. Last time I checked manganese dioxide just catalyzed the H2O2 to H2O and O2. If you take three percent H2O2 and add manganese dioxide, you will get oxygen being produced. When this has ceased you add more and it starts up again. You can do this an infinite amount of times (of course your reactants will get extremely dilute :mad:
