jsatan Posted October 16, 2004 Author Posted October 16, 2004 lol. Yeah thats what gets me about comapnies etc, they say it cost too much to do things in abetter way, My answer is no matter how much money you have you cant buy something that isnt there, lol. I'll get saving my zinc, I'll be 96 by 2070 I'll become one of those rich old men with young women on my arm after my money, lol. (keep dreaming)
boris_73 Posted November 26, 2004 Posted November 26, 2004 is the casing on a duracell alkaline battery zinc or another metal because i am not sure about the duracell ones and i dont want to take it apart if it is not, also is it safe to take a battery apart
boris_73 Posted November 26, 2004 Posted November 26, 2004 ok i have just opend a battery and its got a lot of silvery soft metal paste inside what is it its one of those big D batteries Edit: also inside the zinc cup there is a black casing im guessing this is manganese dioxide if so what can you do with manganese dioxide Edit 2: also how dangerous is manganese dioxide because i have just read it is severly dangerous if inhaled ect
YT2095 Posted March 21, 2005 Posted March 21, 2005 the inner rod of an alkaline cell is Zinc (atualy it`s Zinc plated brass) the paste is KOH, so don`t get any on your hands for too long, it`ll take your skin off and you won`t even feel it! the cell case is ordinary steel (try the magnet test). the inhalation of most chemicals can be dangerous, MnO2 is no exception.
MulderMan Posted March 21, 2005 Posted March 21, 2005 the inner rod of an alkaline cell is Zinc (atualy it`s Zinc plated brass) the paste is KOH' date=' so don`t get any on your hands for too long, it`ll take your skin off and you won`t even feel it!the cell case is ordinary steel (try the magnet test). the inhalation of most chemicals can be dangerous, MnO2 is no exception.[/quote'] is that all the black powder that the carbon electrodes are contained in? always wondered what that is, doesnt half make a mess when your trying to get the carbon out!
ed84c Posted March 21, 2005 Posted March 21, 2005 KOH is white. Most likely it is more carbon would explain the mess you (and I) have found when disecting these. Warning to those who try. Do not spill it. You will not get it $%^£@" off!
YT2095 Posted March 21, 2005 Posted March 21, 2005 Mulderman, I was answering Boris` question there. the black powder/paste is in zinc carbon cells and is primarily manganese dioxide/carbon and sal-ammoniac acid (ammonium chloride).
akcapr Posted March 24, 2005 Posted March 24, 2005 it also lets of some steam which can make it burn a bit worse
budullewraagh Posted March 24, 2005 Posted March 24, 2005 yeah, i'll second ed's post. my lab bench still has amorphous carbon on it from the first time i opened a battery... it's no good at all
H2SO4 Posted March 25, 2005 Posted March 25, 2005 some one said that manganese dioxide + H2O2 will make oxygen and permanganaic acid. Last time I checked manganese dioxide just catalyzed the H2O2 to H2O and O2. If you take three percent H2O2 and add manganese dioxide, you will get oxygen being produced. When this has ceased you add more and it starts up again. You can do this an infinite amount of times (of course your reactants will get extremely dilute
YT2095 Posted March 25, 2005 Posted March 25, 2005 correct on both counts minced Liver will also do the same, but it`s alot messier!
budullewraagh Posted March 25, 2005 Posted March 25, 2005 haha, this reminds me of a lab we did in ap bio
budullewraagh Posted March 26, 2005 Posted March 26, 2005 yes, many living things have the enzyme that catalyzes the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide
