Aspirin Posted September 18, 2004 Posted September 18, 2004 Greetings I've been reading a few posts down about separating KClO3/O4 from match heads. i get it all except for this part 4. Boil it some more, until the potassium chlorate/perchlorate starts to form i dont get it. Will the boiling create some big blob of this stuff or what. Thnx LP Aspirin
YT2095 Posted September 18, 2004 Posted September 18, 2004 no, as the water`s evaporated past being a super saturated soln, the (per)Chlorate will no longer remain dissolved, and will re-form as a crystaline precipitate.
Gilded Posted September 18, 2004 Posted September 18, 2004 If they sell non-coloured matches in Slovenia, you should use them (I used green ones, and I think the dye is the main reason for the chlorate's impurity). Also, if you see lots of yellow stuff forming on the surface of the liquid, you might want to filter it again because that's sulfur and stuff. And if you have pyro grade aluminum powder, and a ball mill or something to grind the chlorate into fine powder, you might want to test if you can make flash powder of it in a ratio of 7 chlorate / 3 aluminum (by weight). Magnesium powder should work fine, too. Btw, if you can replace aluminum with magnesium in a flash powder mix, could you replace aluminum with magnesium in a thermite mix?

Aspirin Posted September 18, 2004 Author Posted September 18, 2004 Ok I desolved some match heads in water then heated it up. I've fltered it 3 times and now i have a redish liquid. Is this it?
Gilded Posted September 18, 2004 Posted September 18, 2004 Hmm... I think bud had a red-shaded liquid when he made it, it's just dye I guess. Now you should boil it until there's just about 0,2dl left and see if the chlorate has started to form.
Aspirin Posted September 18, 2004 Author Posted September 18, 2004 so now i just evaporate the water and i get KCLO3/O4
YT2095 Posted September 18, 2004 Posted September 18, 2004 and DON`T overheat it, as you`ll decompose the (per)Chlorate.
Aspirin Posted September 18, 2004 Author Posted September 18, 2004 so to around 100 degrees C or less?
Gilded Posted September 18, 2004 Posted September 18, 2004 I actually burned some yesterday with sugar, and even when the chlorate was impure, big chunks, it burned quite long and well with a nice purple flame.
Aspirin Posted September 18, 2004 Author Posted September 18, 2004 cool I'll try that I'm in the middle of proces of extracting it. LP
YT2095 Posted September 18, 2004 Posted September 18, 2004 soaked in tissue paper, rolled and dried, it makes fairly good fuse too I get my (per)chlorate in different ways, and the odd part is that with some of it, I made Matches )
Gilded Posted September 18, 2004 Posted September 18, 2004 Unless you are able to heat it with a temp of about 50 C to vaporate the last H2O on a plate or something where it's easy to scrape off, just let it dry in room temp. Or, you could mix the sugar/whatever you're mixing while it's still wet.
YT2095 Posted September 18, 2004 Posted September 18, 2004 Except in the case of Alu powder, DONT mix that when wet! LOL ) you could pour it all into a flat based glass tray and put it in the oven (not Microwave!) on low for a short while then scrape it off with a credit card or something too
Aspirin Posted September 18, 2004 Author Posted September 18, 2004 OK The H2o evaporated and i got tiny crystals. i hope this is it
Aspirin Posted September 18, 2004 Author Posted September 18, 2004 I'll try again later today cuz i'll go to the super market and buy a case of matches. I was a little short this time. just 1 question. I used matches which had a redish brown head. Are these ok.
Gilded Posted September 18, 2004 Posted September 18, 2004 I think they are the ones with the least color. I'd like to know if any company sells non-dyed matches.

Gilded Posted September 18, 2004 Posted September 18, 2004 I'm 192 or something and I'm 16 years old. :| Aspirin, my mother would like to know if the Postojna cave in Slovenia is worth of visiting. Have you ever been there?
Aspirin Posted September 18, 2004 Author Posted September 18, 2004 Been there 3 times. It's great if you ask me. Here's a link to thier site: http://www.postojnska-jama.si/en/cave.htm LP Aspirin
