Nate Barna Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 Hi, I'm trying to figure out how to pronounce "ampliative." Some dictionaries to which i have access either don't have the word, have no pronunciation, or the pronunciation Am"pli*a*tive which i don't know how to interpret. Pronunciations of this form are adequate: AM plee uh tive am PLEE uh tive am plee AY tive Thanks!
Sayonara Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 Personlly I'd say "am-plee-ah-tive". That's what I'd say too.
5614 Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 Personlly I'd say "am-plee-ah-tive". i was about to say me three! then i thought of a slight minor change amp-lee-ah-tive
Dave Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 Was just using his form of doing it, although personally I think the 'p' should come with the 'lee'.
bloodhound Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 i would go for the second one. most pple from america would probably go for the first or the last one
Sayonara Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 i would go for the second one. most pple from america would probably go for the first or the last one Americans aren't allowed opinions on pronunciation.
Nate Barna Posted September 20, 2004 Author Posted September 20, 2004 Thanks all. So would the general consensus be a stress of the second syllable?
Sayonara Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 Looks like it, yeah. Otherwise people will think you're yelling at them
Nate Barna Posted September 20, 2004 Author Posted September 20, 2004 Yeah, that's basically my biggest problem too: i can't figure where the stress goes. But i've noted bloodhound's response and i'm wondering if everyone would agree.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 http://www.englishforums.com Try it there. It's an english forum.
5614 Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 amp-lee-ah-tive stress on the first sylaball i would have though [cap'n, you're not supposed to direct devoted members to other fourms!!!]
Nate Barna Posted September 20, 2004 Author Posted September 20, 2004 Wow, thanks 5614. I also asked them over at EnglishForums. No one has even read it yet though... Thanks all again for quick and helpful responses.
Dave Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 No problem 5614: I believe he was just pointing out somewhere that he could get a second opinion from. No real harm done tbh.
Phi for All Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 Americans aren't allowed opinions on pronunciation. We tend to put the em-PHAS-is on the wrong syl-LAB-le.
