What type of chemical reaction is potassium nitrate (KNO3) and sugar (C12H22O11) be?

We mixed 3:2 ratio, melted it and lit it on fire, producing smoke.

Nitrate is one of nitrogen's highest oxidation states. Ammonium nitrate is used as an oxidizer in some explosives. That's a pretty strong hint. Also, have you ever heard the term "reducing sugar"?

Yes an oxidation. But whenever there is an oxidation there must also be a ________.

 

So this is an oxidation-________ reaction.
