Carly Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 What type of chemical reaction is potassium nitrate (KNO3) and sugar (C12H22O11) be? We mixed 3:2 ratio, melted it and lit it on fire, producing smoke.

That's a pretty strong hint. Also, have you ever heard the term "reducing sugar"?

Horza2002 Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 It is indeed a type of chemical reaction. As is reduction, subsitution, elimination, decomposition
Carly Posted February 5, 2011 Author Posted February 5, 2011 so is this type of chemical reaction oxidation? or would it be synthesis- combining 2 or more substances to create a new compound?

Yes an oxidation. But whenever there is an oxidation there must also be a ________. So this is an oxidation-________ reaction.
