Martin Posted September 25, 2004 Posted September 25, 2004 this thread is for links to online physics resources especially online physics textbooks and lecture notes but also links to handbook-type data, images, webography. there are a lot of online physics textbooks out there and course materials of all sorts including animations. Maybe we can pool what we've each found. categories overlap---one text might cover some classical mechanics, some relativity, some quantum mechanics---so probably the best thing is everybody who wants can throw their favorite physics links into one pile and some of us sort it out later if necessary. in case it needs to be emphasized, all this stuff is free for individual download and for your own learning use (but contains some copyright drafts of books these people are working on and will publish)

Martin Posted September 25, 2004 Author Posted September 25, 2004 this is essentially a free uptodate undergraduate physics textbook they are writing it and every year it gets better this is the version for the academic year 2004-2005 http://www.pma.caltech.edu/Courses/ph136/yr2004/ my impression is this book is really high quality, Kip Thorne has a lot of talent,
Martin Posted September 25, 2004 Author Posted September 25, 2004 http://www.cco.caltech.edu/~phys1/java/phys1/MovingCharge/MovingCharge.html this is the animation of the electric fieldlines of a moving charge and you have a menu of how the charge is to move----it can be user-controlled in which case you put the mouse on a little steering wheel and guide the direction there is also "schizo" which is crazy random motion, and there is "elipse" which is beautiful and sinewave and spiral motion etc. try varying the speed as well. it shows how electromagnetic waves are transmitted by acceleration of the charge back and forth in the antenna----and it shows that information of changes in the motion of the charge can only propagate outwards at the speed of light, so the "news" of the motion is always spreading outwards like the ripples on a pond surface
Martin Posted September 25, 2004 Author Posted September 25, 2004 I accidentally came across a page with many Applets many links to animation and graphdrawing stuff there is a movie about a magnetically levitating frog apparently but I only saw a still from it have to go. it may have good stuff, dont know http://faculty.washington.edu/cobden/321/resources.htm
swansont Posted September 25, 2004 Posted September 25, 2004 Hyperphysics Concepts is quite useful, as is Eric Weisstein's World of Physics
Alexa Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 All right, Martin. I'll check from time to time to see how the threads evolve and if I can you anything to help you, this will be my pleasure ! See you soon, Alexa
