ewmon Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 The ambient temperature (above/below freezing) at the elevation of their development helps determine if the precipitation will be snow or rain. Snow is water molecules forming solid crystals, and rain is water molecules forming water droplets. You may also have seen snow hitting windows that is already beginning to melt because the temp near the ground above freezing, or rain that has frozen because the temp near the ground is below freezing. Liquid water will absorb CO2 from the atmosphere, which creates an acid inside the drop, making rain slightly acidic. So, rain tends to be naturally acidic. And, as makers of ice creams know, coldness affects our perception of taste.
