Hello all on the Science Forums! :)

 

This is my first post, I hope it's in the right category. I've come with a question that I haven't been able to have answered by even the most professional gastroenterologists in the country (Australia).

 

I seem to be re-acquiring some form of illness or bodily dysfunction which induces gastroenteritis that my doctors and specialists have not been able to diagnose. About once every 2-3 years for the last ten years, I have been coming down with the usual onset of gastroenteritis symptoms (forgive me here as I will try not to go into any more detail than is absolutely necessary) but the symptoms include profuse watery diarrhea (up to 12 visits to the bathroom per hour for 6 hours), often (but not always) accompanied by extremely persistent violent emesis (throwing up twice to three times every three minutes nonstop for 6 hours straight, I have clocked it at this rate the last 5 times), the usual stomach cramps and abdominal pains, and the final symptom which baffles me as there has been no listing of it in any medical journal or pathological symptom checker I have come across; a foul tasting belch which has a taste like sulphur (or rotten eggs / burned popcorn). The symptoms come on extremely abruptly (almost instantly, usually the belch is the first sign I get that something is gravely wrong inside me), and the last 5 times I have had this, they last for almost exactly 6 hours and then disappear almost as quickly as they came.

 

I suspect this foul taste is Hydrogen Sulfide, however I have not been able to locate anyone I know in person who can relate to ever having these symptoms, particularly the belching of hydrogen sulfide. Most of the people I know who have suffered gastroenteritis bouts only report having to visit the toilet twice an hour, with only three episodes of emesis per day, however it seems to last a lot longer for them (up to a week), whereas I have never had an enteroviral infection last me this long. My doctors are baffled as culture tests come back negative, but my white blood cell count comes back elevated and it remains elevated for up to 4 weeks. Interestingly enough, there seems to be a large group of people online who suffer these same symptoms but their doctors usually fob it off with "oh it's a gastro bug going around at the moment, just drink water etc etc", however I find that consumption of water is literally impossible for the 6 hour duration of the illness or bodily dysfunction, both due to the incredibly intense nausea, and the continuous bouts of emesis.

 

Can anyone relate to having these symptoms, primarily accompanied by the strange belching of hydrogen sulfide.

Alternatively, can anyone recommend me an extremely effective anti-emetic? This constant re-occurring illness has left me with emetophobia quite literally. Metoclopramide Hydrochloride seemed to stop the vomiting during my last bout however it did nothing for the intense nausea, perhaps Nausetil (prochlorperazine maleate) combined with Metoclopramide Hydrochloride may be a way to combat this if safe to mix the two?

 

The only conclusions I can come to that *may* cause it are:

 

* Gastroparesis (Delayed gastric emptying, however this usually only causes the belches and vomiting, not diarrhea as the food doesn't often make it past the upper GI)

 

* Giardia Lamblia / other protozoans (I have been told this parasite can cause the same strange belches as a result of gas produced by the parasite, it is also accompanied by profuse diarrhea and vomiting, and could be a very likely cause)

 

* Helicobacter Plyori (Tested negative for this, so I doubt it is this, but it has been known to cause the same taste).

 

* There is a likelyhood that the symptom is listed as "bloating/gas" yet the actual taste is not often described in articles.

 

* One of the only other answers I can come to (which one of my doctors suggested), is that perhaps the upper GI of some people handles gastroenteritis induced emesis differently (particularly when it's caused by a viral, protozoan or bacterial infection, otherwise we would see people getting these belches from drinking too much alcohol).

 

I may have a few facts wrong here (absolute n00b biologist here just waiting to dig his hands into culture dishes and cut things open!). I would appreciate any and all input as I have been trying to find out what this is since 2003. Thank you all for taking the time to read this strenuously long post! I am looking to find the definite answer to this once and for all (this is also the primary reason I have ditched my last job as a multimedia artist to study to become a biologist. I wish to find out the reason for this strange onset of symptoms and what protozoan, viral or bacterial infection causes it should it be one of those infections).

It looks like this causes a strong phobia in other people as well, I personally don't blame any single person who has to pertain to this miasma of undiagnosable illness. It seems none of their doctors can figure out the cause too. It seems almost too simple to label it as Giardia given that I cannot find a reliable source of information stating "Giardia causes common belching of hydrogen sulfide".

 

For those who have found this thread by google, I will update this post as often as I can, I'm set like concrete on figuring out what this damn ailment is!

I have also had hydrogen sulfide burps as a separate problem when I was much younger and there is quite a bit about this on the web. I wonder what the effect of bile reflux into the stomach would be. I have had pain, diarrhea, and vomiting similar to what you describe related to a gall bladder problem (sludge). I was told that these symptoms are typical. Interesting. I was considering that the cause may be bile reflux into the stomach (Does bile have an extremely foul sulphur / rotten egg taste to it?) because if so, it may be a viable cause of this symptom.

 

Also out of curiosity, were your burps accompanied by the other symptoms (ie gastroenteritis)

For me, the gastroenteritis and H2S burps were separate incidents. In a very quick search I saw a post on a medical forum that linked the two. I suggest that you start refining a web search with all of the symptoms and also search Google Scholar for research and medical reports. SM

Thanks for your advice. I have been trawling the web and I too have found many reports of people with the same symptoms as I although their causes are all completely different. Some people have stated that simple things such as Red Dye #40 causes it for them, others find eating certain foods causes it, or eating at certain places (ie mcdonalds), and some poor souls seem to get it almost every month with no reason they can find! I couldn't live with such a thing, however there doesn't seem to be a concrete cause. There is multiple causes however due to the intensity, I'd say it's unlikely an allergy to "food dye" etc. I seriously believe it's some kind of food poisoning bacteria or a virus transmitted via the fecal-oral route (unhygienic food handling methods) etc.

 

I will check Google Scholar now, thanks for letting me know.

So you haven't been able to associate it with anything you eat? What does the vomit look like (blood, coffee grounds, green, yellow, watery, etc)? What does the diarrhea look like (bloody, dark, greasy, green, yellow, watery, etc)? Have you ever gotten a gallbladder ultrasound?

No but seriously it sounds like you have a bacterial infection. I assume you've been on antibiotics already? The fact that they've had no effect could point to an infection in the smooth muscle or possibly within the lining of your stomach? It's the timing that throws me off though, every 2/3 years?

 

Or a bezoar? Maybe some of your food gets caught up in a bezoar and provides a safe haven for bacteria that, once they reach critical load (say every 2/3 years) they become active and start poisoning you and somehow die off again? Are they stomach cramps or intestine cramps? What environmental factors could there be? I wouldn't discount allergies just yet.

In addition to what I and others have said above, I have a one word explanation based on the behavior of one of the members of my household just yesterday on the rug. Hairballs! Eat some grass and then yak it up. SM

The symptoms looks like the infections of Salmonella or Shigella. I would prefer Salmonella because for that species is characteristic to produce the hydrogen sulfide. Of course virus infections like rothavirus is possible too or Entoamoeba but I think that is Salmonella. I work with this kind of bacteria and symptoms looks the same like in normal ;) infections. First You should doing a swab from the anus next speciment of feaces and take to the laboratory in three consecutive days. I'm curious what will come out of research.

I have recently had these symptoms happen to me. A few months ago, I had an episode of burping up foul tasting popcorn. I found it strange because I hadn't eaten popcorn in over 2 weeks. Then I was "peeing" out my bottom all day long. My stomach hurt and I felt nauseated but never threw up. Then 2 weeks ago I did have popcorn and the next day I had the same symptoms. Here I am this am starting all over again with stomach pains and the burping of popcorn. I have not had popcorn since my last episode 2 weeks ago. I am at a loss. I am on nexium to prevent stomach ulcers and i know I have the start of diverticulitis on my left side and I have an umbilical hernia. My stomach hurts bad in this area and stops after the diarrhea goes away. I can't drink water during the episodes or I get more d. This site, and the link you posted above, is the only place I have seen about these symptoms. I'd like to know what you find out as this sudden onset for me is worrisome. Having to go to Military doctors who don't really give a rats "" I have to stay on top of my own care and figure things out. I know I'll get the it's a virus/bug speel and I know that's not it bc why would it be so far apart yet so close together and the same symptoms?

Thanks for posting and looking for answers. I'm glad to find I'm not alone but yet not so glad nobody knows what this is.

I too have bouts with belches that taste like sulphur. Just had an episode last night, this time I threw up once, but burped and gasy all night. I believe it's coming from the different types of food on the market these days. I generally eat fresh vegetables, and well rounded meals. i have noticed in the last 10 years I've been experiencing more issues with my stomach and been more and more gasy. So i've been paying attention to the brands of food I eat closer and I'm realizing the brands that are known to have GMO's seem to be the cause for my issues. My idea to put a stop to these issues, is I've planted my own vegie garden, eat only non-GMO products and staying away from Milk since milk seems to be a food laced with poison. My thought on this issue is our government is poisoning us slowly killing us off, don't agree? maybe you should look into the amount of teenagers that are all the sudden having extreme gastroenteritis, or the fact that the market is full of digestive system drinks. 20 yrs ago there wasn't half the people with stomach problems as there are today. Doctors don't have a clue as to why there are so many kids with these issues, let alone do they know what to do for them... Change your diets, buy organic food, stay away from prepacked frozen foods, kellogs, and any other well known GMO. The pestiscides in GMO grown foods is at a deadly rate and your government doesn't care to protect your health or anything else from the causes and side effects of GMO's. yes GMO's are proven to cause tumors and other deformaties on rats. Why do you think over half the world has stopped excepting any kind of GMO foods from the United States. Read and learn about the food you buy in your neighborhood grocery store, half of it is posion.. You are what you eat!!!

Hello. I have been getting this odd temporary illness for a few monthes now. The first 2 times were the worst. Constant vomiting, stomach aches, horrible diarrhea and this strange rancid popcorn smelling burps. Also my stomach constantly growls during these episodes. Embarrassingly loud too. As others stated, once I get a "burp" I know the other symtoms will start shortly and last from 4-12 hours. This all just started happening to me recently. 2-3 months ago I'd say and I have had about 4 bouts of this. As I stated, the first 2 times were the worst. I am a pretty healthy 42 year old man who rarely gets sick, (knock on wood) so this is really worring me...


The first time I had this I did not worry at all. Just thought it was a bug/virus that would run it's course. It started on a Friday afternoon and by Saturday afternoon it just went away and I was fine. Even went out that night to meet friends at a bar. Odd. Then the following Thursday it came back and I started to get very worried. I called out of work to see my Dr. He sent me to get an ultrasound of my stomach. Nothing. Then went to see a gastroenterologist. He did not do much other then ask what the symptoms were, felt my stomach and asked if I had been on antibiotics lately? I said yes. A few weeks prior to (I will call it "The Burp") The Burp I had been put on Amoxicillin after a root canal. I only took the Amoxicillin for about 2 days. It made me feel nauseous, yet I didn't vomit. I took myself off of it and I was fine after. When I told the gastroenterologist this, it almost seemed like it was a closed case to him. He said it was most likely a reaction to the Amoxicillin. I told him it was weeks since I was on the antibiotic, and he said it is not unusual for a delayed reaction like this to happen. I asked If its unusual for it to repeat back to back like this. He said yes and that was it, but was unfamiliar with the burp smell. I did not feel comfortable with this diagnosis...About 2-3 weeks went by and It did not come back, so I figured the Dr. Was correct.

 

Well, it came back a few weeks later, but it came and went quickly this time and did not seem as severe. I woke up with it at about 6am. during my 3rd bout and decided to try going to work. Had all the usual symptoms...but a bit more mild then usual. No diarrhea this time. At around 9am I had to run to the bathroom to throw up. And I threw up A LOT. But after that it went away and I felt great. Burps stopped too.

 

So a few weeks go by and yesterday, Sat 4/20/13 I ate Moe's brand (frozen) empenadas for lunch(Noon time). About 2 hrs after I ate them(2 pm) the Burps started and I felt slightly nauseous. No diarrhea this time either. So I just continued to try and ignore it and went on with my day. Around 6pm that evening I still had the burps but the nausea pretty much went away, not completely, but enough that I could eat dinner. My dinner was leftovers. Reheated Purdue Chicken Tenderloins with chicken gravy. Canned Del Monte Green beans and Idahoan buttery homestyle instant mashed potatoes. At 9pm that evening I was able to go out with friends. I had a Woodpecker Cider and then a few pints of Guinness at the bar. Around 11pm I suddenly had a bad hot flash and felt like I was going to vomit. I was able to hold back the vomit...It was hard to do but I did somehow and saved myself from the embarrasment. However the burps lasted all day and didn't go away. I actually had to go outside, or to an area of the bar where there were no people to burp a few times. I came home around midnight and I started to feel better again. When I woke up this morning, 4/21/13, I felt fine. I even burped and no popcorn smell, so I knew it was gone...For now anyway...

 

Also to add, I have been drinking a lot of Crystal Light and using Equal in my coffee for the past 5 years. About 2 weeks ago I quit any and all Aspartame products and went back to sugar after doing online research of this poison. I dont know if this relates to this subject, but I might as well add this. Who knows...


The diarrhea and vomit both usually look the same. Light brown slightly chunky looking liquid. During my second bout I noticed carrot slivers, or what looked to be carrot in my vomit. Some time after my second experience I was at work and was going to get some kind of Asian noodles that I like. Not lo Mein...Cant remember what it was called, but I will update when I see it again. when I looked at it I noticed the long carrot slivers that resembled what was in my vomit and remembered that I ate this meal around the time of my second bout. So I passed. I have been trying to pick my brain about what I ate before the first bout and I think I ate the same noodle dish. Not definite, but pretty sure. I cannot remember what I ate before the 3rd bout. Last night I decided to start keeping a journal about this. Thats why I have a detailed description of my day and what I ate. I am hoping it is a reaction to something I eat and can eliminate whatever it is from my diet. So I will document what I eat or do to see if there is any similarity so I can possibly narrow this down and have better info for my Dr. One thing I have noticed, is that it seems to be getting less severe each time.

 

I am really happy I found this forum and can write to people who can relate with me.Its been a GREAT help. When I ask other people I know, they have never experienced this strange burping illness. I feel bad for all of you because I know what you are going through and hopefully we can get some answers someday.

I have thought about what I have been eating since I posted the above reply. I have been eating A LOT of chicken lately. I stated above that I have Chicken, green beans or corn and instant mash. I am a horrible cook and this is something simple that I could make quickly and easily. Lunch is usually a deli sliced chicken breast and cheese sandwich. Lots of Yogurt too. Trying to eat healthy and now all these odd and sudden symptoms start. My burps seem to smell of popcorn/sulfer, so I am looking at all the ingredient lables of my usual dinners. The spice I use, Montreal Chicken, has an ingredient that raised some curiosity. The last ingredient is just labeled as "sulfiting agents". And I load it on to kill the blandness of the chicken. I read up on this a bit and found this at http://www.allergyexpert.us/food/sulfites.html.

I did not mention in my first post that I have the Abdominal Cramping lately and my skin seems to get itchy at times and when I scratch it, it leaves a raised, red, rash like marks where I scratch. I am not asthmatic and the "non asthmatic" symptoms seem to sum up many of the symptoms have been experiencing lately except the burping. My mother can not drink wine due to bad reactions from Sulfites too. I did not think the rash like reactions and cramping could be related to the "burps", but after a bit more reading...Maybe it is.

 

I used to eat a lot of fried foods, pizza and all that good stuff and felt fine, but changed my diet due to high chlosterol and triglycerides. I was taking Crestor for a few years and got my numbers down to good, healthy levels. I do not like being on meds, so I asked my Dr. about getting off of Crestor. He took me off, cold turkey for 3 months and I will be getting bloodwork done in june to see the off Crestor/diet change results.

 

I never had any issues until I made all these supposedly healthy lifestyle changes. Man, am I confused. Going to try and cut out the Montreal Chicken spice and cut down on chicken all together too and see what happens...

I have to wonder whether or not it could have a strong connection to what your diet is like. Another possibility could be the way your body processes certain things and/or any blockages. I'm very into holistic medicine and nutrition so from that perspective, it sounds like there is something your body is not breaking down properly.

For the most part, I only eat whole foods. I know that on the occasion where I make the (poor) choice of eating processed foods the consequences are similar to what you describe. My mom has had many bouts similar to what was described above. For years she was told it was everything from a bug to diverticulitis. One doctor said it was IBS as it would change from severe diarrhea to constipation almost instantly. Once she finally got sick of answers and treatments that were going nowhere fast she started doing her own research and came across Celiac Disease. Well she cut out gluten along with pretty much all refined foods and within 3 weeks the symptoms were resolved.

I now have an almost 2 year old whose gluten intolerance was obvious within a month of being born. She had constant colic, constipation, and what the doctor said was reflux. I was not ok with the idea of giving my infant Prilosec so I explored other options starting with the possibility of lactose intolerance. Since I was breast feeding I removed all dairy from my diet which helped some. Desperate for my little one to feel better I looked at the potential of Celiac being hereditary and then removed all gluten from my diet. I had a different baby within 24 hours.

Recently, while going through a bout of eczema, constipation, and vomiting, I discovered nutrition response testing as part of the Ulan Standard Process. On my first testing session I found out that my adrenals and thyroid had blockages. It also showed sensitivity to soy, rye, barley (no more beer for me) and that I had formeldahyde and several heavy metals hanging out in my body.

Once I removed the things I knew I was consuming the symptoms resolved within a week. Figuring out where everything else was coming from took a bit more work. I researched and researched and oh yeah researched. Come to find out that formeldahyde is in most fabric softener and the metals were from using drain cleaner and CFL lightbulbs. Now last night I went against my usual eating habits and I have the burps that taste like rotten eggs, stomach pain, bloating, fatigue, and diarrhea.

The whole point to this is that nothing should be discounted as a potential cause. Especially since we live in a time that most things we use and consume daily are processed beyond recognition and full of toxic chemicals. Pay attention to your body and what it's telling you. Clearly, something has to be a common factor between all these bouts. It could be your body just getting to the point of not being able to handle anything else being put in that it can't process.

Also, as a side note, depending on the medical system that you go to. Celiac disease and some other similar things are not accepted. I live in Minnesota and found out that Mayo Clinic more or less discounts Celiacs as an "illness".

I end up getting gastroenteritis at least once a year. I currently have symptoms of gastroenteritis but I'm not sure if that is what is going on this time. I have a broken tooth which has become infected and right after starting antibiotics I began getting these symptoms. The reason why I'm posting is because I'm not sure if it's the infection causing the symptoms or if I have both the infection from the broken tooth and gastroenteritis or if it is all from the infection. I also have a new symptom which doesn't seem to go with either and I'm sorry to post it here but I can't find any answers not even from doctors so maybe someone has an idea. My diarrhea smells like fresh brewed coffee which is odd because I have not had coffee for several weeks because my body doesn't tolerate it very well so I can only drink it on a rare occasion. Any ideas why this would be happening now? It is also a very dark green color with a coffee ground consistency, sorry to be graphic but figured I would add that in case it's important. I have been sick with this for 3 days now and I also have nausea and a severe headache which is only on the right side while the broken tooth is on the left side. I also am extremely tender in the lower back and ribs on my right side. I'm assuming that this is due to the 3 days of diarrhea but also mentioned it in case it's something else.

This is the first post I have ever done, so please bear with me. Over the past 4 or 5 months I've had very similar symptoms to those described above. Just to reiterate: I usually wake up with a stomach ache, then I get these very distinctive sulphuric (Hydrogen Sulfide) burps. Almost immediately afterwards I will vomit, which is soon followed by severe diarrhoea. The vomiting and diarrhoea then interchange for approx. 1 hour (from when onwards my stomach is completely empty). I usually rest for the whole day, eating plain foods, and feel back to myself the next day.

 

Initially I believed it just to be a horrible bout of food poisoning, and dismissed it as something dodgy I must have eaten the previous day/ night. However, from the second time onwards I began to be doubtful. Things came to a climax the day before yesterday when I woke up with the cramps and sulphuric burps followed by the vomitting and diarrhoea. Once I believed i was done I spent the day relaxing. I ate a bowl of pasta with some pesto, a small yogurt with some brown sugar and then another bowl of pasta and pesto (i.e. what i thought to be very plain food). By early evening, approximately 2 hours after eating the 2nd pasta, I began to feel nauseous and began to fear the worst! Low and behold the sulphuric burps surfaced and shortly afterwards I was back to where I was that morning. This time, however, the stomach cramps were absolutely debilitating- they didn't feel as though they were located in one part of my abdomen, but the whole of it, and spread to my back. This continued for 6 hours, during which I was rolling arond on the floor in agony. My parents decided to take me to a doctor (this is at 3am) who on seeing me said I had to go to Accident and Emergency. Just to illustrate the pain, I have very little recollection of events as I was rolling on the floor or getting violently sick! On arrival at UCL Hospital I had several blood samples taken, was hooked up on an intravenous and administered liquid (as I was super dehydrated) and an injection which I was told would take away the nausea and vomitting. Almost immediately this worked and I was my normal self again. My blood tests (apologies, I'm not sure what was tested) came back without any indication of what it might be. The nurses said they thought it was just a bug. When the doctor came to check on me she many questions: pain location, stool colour, was there blood in vomit or stool, how severe on a pain scale (the answers being abdomen and maybe even my back, just brown, no blood present, and the pain was 10/10- I know this sounds over the top, but I am telling you that the pain I was undergoing was verging on making me unconscious!).

 

The doctor then carried out an exam on my abdomen, which didn't hurt at all- apparently indicating that no lasting physical damage had beendone. Despite not being a specialist, both my parents and I were very impressed by the doctor. She believed that it was probably bacteria located in my small intestine. I had a stool sample taken, the results for which I will find out some time next week. I am also going to have a blood cultures test carried out which may prove insightful.

 

At the moment I think that the doctor is quite possibly correct, however, I am also wondering if it is coeliacs disease or a lactose intolerance. i say this as either the pasta or small amount of yogurt may have been responsible for the second bout. That said, other than possibly being coeliacs, lactose or bacteria overgrowth related, it may be an infection, c. difficile, kidney stones, gallbladder, ulcer etc etc. If anyone reads any of this and has any information as to its cause I would be extremely grateful. I'm finding this situation almost debilitating. It's making me nervous of eating anything other than brown rice, fruit and vegetables! I did however eat a very small amount of cous cous today and also had a couple of spoonfuls of yogurt, neither of which seem to have had a profound affect on my stomach (touch wood!).

 

Just to let you know, I'm otherwise a very healthy and fit 21 year old guy. I have had absolutely no health problems. I eat lots of fruit and veg, do regular exercise and am always hydrated. I do not even drink alcohol (or take drugs)! I'll post on this site if I receive some useful information. Thanks for reading this rather lengthy post, and if you're going through what I am I feel extremely sorry for you. My advice would be to go to a hospital the next time you begin to experience the symptoms as they have medication which can prevent hours of agony!
